Apple has addressed and issue where Mac OS X spawns an AirPort process that occupies an inordinate chunk of processor resources in Knowledge Base document #304798.

Apple says: "After updating to Mac OS X 10.4.8, if some third-party VPN client software is installed, Activity Monitor may show the AirPort process taking 90% or more of the CPU time, and the computer may seem "slow".

The stated solution is as follows: "Make sure your third-party VPN client software is up-to-date. Contact your network administrator or the manufacturer of your VPN client software."

If you've experienced this issue, please let us know.
