AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler released for download, priced at US $1.99
As expected, Apple has released a downloadable package that unlocks 802.11n functionality on most Core 2 Duo and Xeon-based Macs, including:
- MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo
- MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo
- Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme option
- iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)
The package is available for purchase from the Apple Store at a price of US$1.99.
As previously noted, the update is included free with the second generation 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base station. It also appears that Apple is shipping new Core 2 Duo and Xeon-based Macs from the factory with 802.11n functionality already enabled.
As such, Apple says that before purchasing the 802.11n Enabler software, users should check to make sure that not already have the 802.11n enabler already installed via the following steps:
- Open Network Utility (found in the Applications > Utilities folder)
- Under the Info Tab, choose Network Interface (en1)
- In the section "Model: Wireless Network Adapter," if it says (802.11a/b/g/n), you already have the 802.11n enabler installed. If it says (802.11a/b/g), you do not have the 802.11n enabler installed.
Apple has also included a note stating that the 802.11n enabler's software license allows the purchaser to apply the update on all Macs "under (their) ownership or control."
If you've applied this enabler, please let us know your experience -- especially with connections to 802.11n-capable third-party wireless routers.

The updater is only for Core 2 Duo Intel Macs.
If you do have a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, the update will not install unless you've installed AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001 first.
We're not REQUIRED to have an n router to get n speeds are we?
A quick visit to Apple's CLI Airport tool confirms that ad-hoc networks between these 2 n-enabled cards is still 54MBit.
Wonderful...
Probably 54Mb for the time being.... easily fixed in a later firmware.

- FWIW, I am only getting 144MB connections on my Linksys WAP4400N Draft 802.11n access point. I expected more speed, but will do some reboots and settings tweaks to see if I can get it to full speed (300mb).
