MacBook (13") Core 2 Duo: Random shutdowns

We previously reported extensively on an issue where MacBook (13") Core Duos (first generation) exhibit random shutdowns under varying circumstances (see this section of our MacBook special report). In many cases, this issue could be forced to occur with a "dev/null" test in the Terminal, and resolved with application of Apple's SMC firmware update for the systems.

We've now received the first reports of this issue occurring on Core 2 Duo (second generation) MacBooks.

MacFixIt reader Michael Williams writes:

"My month-old C2D MacBook (with 2GB RAM and 200GB HDD) suddenly started displaying the dreaded Random Shutdown Syndrome a couple of days ago. Since then it's been impossible to use the machine for more than an hour or so.

"This problem plagued the previous revision of the MacBook, and Apple released a Firmware Update which purported to fix the problem. This update is not recommended for new (Late 2006, Core 2 Duo) MacBooks.

"I called tech support, who took me through hardware tests with Techtool Pro (passed) and PRAM and SMC resets. The problem continued, so it's going to be collected for repair. I am in the UK. Initially Apple refused to collect, even under AppleCare, and wanted me to bring it to an Authorised Repair Centre myself. I refused and asked for a refund under the terms of the UK's Sales of Goods Act. They then offered to collect! I urge anyone else who finds it difficult to to take their laptop to a service centre to do the same thing."
