Special Report: Troubleshooting QuickTime 7.1.5
[posted Tuesday, March 13th]
We've published our QuickTime 7.1.5 Special Report, aggregating and streamlining our previous coverage of issues and fixes associated with this update, as well as adding some significant new content including a section on verifying complete installation and forcing a re-install if necessary.
Contents:
- Common fix: Try re-installing (first installation may not be complete); forcing installation
- Devices not mounting
- EyeTV issues
- Files modified by this update
- Finder crashing and re-launching
- Kernel panics after updating
- No sound after update -- fix
- Problems starting up after update is applied
- QuickTime movies, other media in Web pages (embedded) will not play
- Release notes/download link
- Reverting to an earlier version of QuickTime (downgrading or uninstalling)
- Streaming media issues
- TurboTax will not launch, fix posted
- VLC: problems playing media, reverting to an earlier version

Same for me... I see no EyeTV 2.3.1 problems, no VLC problems, and no other problems whatsoever on my PowerBook G4 or CoreDuo Mac Mini with 10.4.8 and all the latest Apple updates installed.
You do not have to pay again if you have already paid for Pro 7 and you will not have to pay again until Pro 8. Just ignore any ads by Apple. Your Pro 7 key should still be there when you update, but if it is not, just re-enter your existing Pro 7 key.
Tried to install QT 7.1.3, after getting rid of 7.1.5, as per the instructions. Alas, keep getting error: can't install
because, a later version of QT....blah blah.
When doing Find, nothing comes up for QT 7.1.5!
Repaired permissions, restarted, a number of times, dumped the
QT 7.1.3 installer and downloaded a new one, cleared caches,
even ran Tech Tool. Still, unable to install, 7.1.3.

I've often read on this site of other people's of problems after applying Software Update, but never had one myself.
So this is a first.
After updating to QuickTime 7.1.5, my Kodak EasyShare application would quit whenever I tried to transfer, play or edit a video file. It would do this without generating a Crash Report, or any log file that I could find, which initially made it difficult to pinpoint where the problem was.
I initially thought it was related to a new OS X user account I created, coincidentally around the same time the QT update came out.
Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the EasyShare software, to no avail.
It was only when I reverted to QT 7.1.3 (using the instructions elsewhere on this site: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2007031310092798) that the problem went away.
To double check that the original problem was not due to an incomplete installation of QuickTime 7.1.5, I did a "forced install" using Pacifist (http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070313101411459). Hey presto, the problem returned and the app would quit again every time.
I don't know enough to figure out whether this problem is limited to my version of the operating system (OS X 10.3.9), or a quirk of my particular machine, though I doubt it.
The moral of the story is: Don't upgrade to QuickTime 7.1.5 if you're running Kodak EasyShare.
I'm not overly confident that Apple will make fixes in future to accommodate this relatively uncommon(?) competitor to iPhoto, and Kodak don't appear to devote great resources to their Mac ports, but we can always hope that the conflict might possibly be resolved in future releases from one or other party.

- Well I have! It will no longer play .wav movies, as older versions did. Also with 10.49, it says it dose not know how to play them, when before QT would launch them??
