Mac OS X 10.4.9 Special Report: Final Cut Pro/Express: Capture issues, performance concerns

It appears that the ability to capture video in Final Cut Pro 4.5 is broken for many users under Mac OS X 10.4.9. Users with this version of Final Cut Pro are experiencing either dropped frames or completely interrupted captures in most cases.

The only solutions to this problem appear to be a downgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or an upgrade to Final Cut Pro 5.x.

It appears that the same problem affects Final Cut Express 2.0.x under Mac OS X 10.4.9.

MacFixIt reader Steve writes:

"There are a number of reports of exactly the same problem with Final Cut Express - needing the latest version to capture properly after upgrading to OS 10.4.9."

With Final Cut Express 2.0.x, the same workarounds are effective -- downgrade to Mac OS X 10.4.8 or upgrade to Final Cut Express HD 3.5.x.

Apple has acknowledged this issue in Knowledge Base article #305284, which states:

"Currently, Apple is recommending against running Final Cut Pro 4.5 or Final Cut Express 3.0 in Mac OS X 10.4.9."

In fact, the company recommends that users who wish to continue using these versions of Final Cut revert to an earlier version of Mac OS X as described in this MacFixIt article.
