iTunes 7.3 released: adds iPhone support, Apple TV features; -50 errors (cannot save library) at launch

by CNET staff

UPDATE: Some users are experiencing a serious issue after updating to iTunes 7.3 where they receive the error message:

  • "The iTunes Library cannot be saved. An unknown error has occurred (-50)"

when launching the new version. The error usually occurs during the "Updating iTunes Library" process.

If you are experiencing this issue, you may want to try re-creating your iTunes Library via the instructions in this Apple Knowledge Base article, or seeking out potentially problematic files in your ~/Music/iTunes Music/ folder.

Also notice how ASCII sorting is no longer used when sorting by a particular tag in the browser window. Numbers now follow alphabetical characters in sort columns. This is new in iTunes 7.3.

I noticed that too. I wonder what is the new sorting order. Putting an "~" in front of a word used to made it go to the top. Not no more!

    I've noticed another sorting improvement....

When CoverFlow is displayed in full screen mode, the sorting informations are taken into account (while it was not in previous versions). By example, I have decided that Leonard Cohen has to be sorted on his name "cohen". In the library, the leonard Cohen's albums appear after the Joe Cocker ones. If I want to access the Leonard Cohen albums quickly I press "coh" on the keyboard and iTunes jumps on the first Leonard Cohen album in the Library.

Up to iTunes 7.2, in full screen CoverFlow mode, it didn't work. To access Leonard Cohen album, you had to press "leon"... provided that you have no other leonard, or leonie something in your artists collection.

Now, you just have to press "coh" and.... wizzzzz, the first Leonard Cohen album is selected

I found out if you are running ShapeShifter, you must first close iTunes and then add iTunes to ShapeShifter Exclude List. Once you have done that, iTunes will start without the icon bouncing in the Dock. Any other problems, I would check out the Apple blog site.

After updating to 7.3 iTunes attempts to recreate the library but crashes part way through. No warnings or error messages, just a crash. I have tried the Apple technique to rebuild the lbrary and also tried doing booting up in Safe Mode but nothing doing.

Be aware then when recreating your iTunes library for 7.3 your play counts and other such data seems to be lost. I'm reverting back to 7.2 for now. Just as well I backed up my library first!

While I'm waiting a bit before I get an iPhone, I did want to get 7.3 installed. And when I did, my Cover Art also began to disappear, and those disappearing were definitely non-iTunes purchased tracks. Moreover, I could not re-paste Album Covers back into those same tracks. So 7.3 does have a bug regarding Cover Art.

As an aside and since Cover Flow, for me, will be an important aesthetic to enjoying iTunes on an iPhone, I will not get an iPhone until 7.3 is sorted out. ...I don't want to hassle with my iTunes Cover Art and an iPhone through some software updates. So, I prefer to wait until this software bug is eliminated. (I hope Apple is aware of this bug, by now. There's a thread on this topic at the Mac iTunes Discussion. I don't know if this issue extends to the Windows 7.3.)

I was able to revert back to iTunes 7.2 (from a backup) and all my Cover Art was reintroduced back into my viewing of the non-iTunes purchased tracks. So, 7.3 does not delete those Album covers, but for some reason will not show or allow paste. Once reversion back to 7.2 was completed, my iTunes Cover Flow was just as it had been prior to installing 7.3.

    I'm now looking for 7.3.x.

It appears that cover art is broken in AIFF files. Previously I could copy lossess to the desktop, convert in SoundStudio (which retains all info) to AIFF and put them through ClickRepair to get really clean music from my old once-transferred LPs.

After the process I'd put the new AIFFs back into iTunes and convert back to Lossless. Everything used to be retained, including the album art.

Now, the covers are missing. In fact, you cannot manually add covers to AIFF files. I copy the cover before deleting the old files and paste into the new.

After appling the update, main screen is empty.
I can see my albums on the left, but if i click on them no songs show up.
The odd part is, i can navigate (wityhout seeing something) and everything is playable.

I noticed that the Airport Express (which is connected to an existing Airport Extreme 802.11n wireless network) cuts out even more than it did before! The Express and the Extreme are in the same room with no obstruction, so that is not the problem.

Once iTunes 7.3 has been started once, you can remove it from the exclude list of APE and it will work fine.

It seems that the initial license agreement panel is the one causing the incompabtility. Once you have accepted the license and this panel disappear there will be no more trouble.
