Fix for iMovie '08 (7.0.1) kernel panics/crashes: Update or uninstall Little Snitch

by CNET staff

We continue to report on an issue where iMovie '08 causes a kernel panic or crashes outright (unexpectedly quits) shortly after launching. Previously noted fixes including deleting various plist files, reverting to iMovie 7.0, removing third-party QuickTime components and more.

It now appears that this issue can, in some cases, be resolved by updating to the latest version of Little Snitch -- a generally useful tool designed to alert you on outgoing network connections. Failing that, you can try uninstalling Little Snitch altogether. In order to do this, download and launch the the Little Snitch installer application and choose the option "uninstall".

One reader writes:

"Just to let you know that many people (including myself) have had the Kernel Panic on iMovie '08 startup solved by upgrading LittleSnitch to the latest version."

This is just one more example of why it pays to keep all of your software up to date. While it may be a nuisance sometimes, the reminders that many programs give you when updates are available, and their ability to check for updates in the background, are helpful for those who don't make a habit of checking Version Tracker every day. And, ironically in this case, Little Snitch is the fellow that lets you know and lets you control just who phones home.
---
Don't anthropomorphize computers.
