Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) to ship in October: development resources "borrowed" for iPhone
Apple has subtly announced that it is delaying the release of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) until October 2007.
In a press release stating that the company had to "borrow resources" from the Mac OS X development team to ship the iPhone on time, Apple says that while Leopard will be feature-complete by the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) -- starting June 11th -- it will not be tested and ridden of bugs by that date.
"We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones."

Apple relegates its own Operarting System to second place & gives first place to one new piece of hardware.
Disturbing.

It has bothered me greatly that Apple took "Computer" out of it's name. Now I understand fully why. They are more interested in selling iTVs and $600 iPhones to teenagers than getting out updates of their operating system. I am 56 years old and not interested in any of those "must have" gadgets to be "in" but I would have bought a new 8 core Pro with Leopard had it been available no later than June. I fully understand, that Apple doesn't care about me but they just lost about a $15,000 order. I have a Developer's copy of Vista Ultimate and may just buy a white box now to take the 8 core's place. I'll make two predictions:
1. Apple's stock is going to take a big hit tomorrow and they will see a big decline in computer hardware sales until Leopard comes out.
2. I think the Leopard operating system will be the last new operating system we will see from Apple. I predict over the next year or so they will withdraw from the compute market and sell gizmos to teenagers.
Unfortunately our current government administration has taught us that greed is good and Apple can make more money selling gizmos to teenagers than selling computers and operating systems to mature adults. This is why I do not like the share holder system of business. It concentrates on getting rich fast and not what is best.
Get over it people, it's not that much of a delay.
And those people who "I might switch to vista," yeah right. It's kind of like if Bush is re-elected I'm gonna move to Canada. Whatever. If you like Vista you are probably already using it.

So you're a Communist, or what?
Apple is in business to make money. They're going to win more converts for the iPhone than for an OS. They just sold the 100 millionth iPod. My Powerbook works just fine on 10.4.9. Sure I'm disappointed, but they make the best stuff out there and I'll wait.
As for the "current government administration" thing, last I heard, Bill Clinton was getting about $80,000 for every speech he makes. It's not President Bush's fault that your frackin' OS won't ship on time. If you don't like it, go buy a computer made in Cuba.

Hahaha... good luck with that :p Every review that we've read about vista says that it's like windows95 warmed over. You talk about being disappointed, wait until you try to keep vista from crashing :)
Everyone is disappointed that Leopard will take a few months longer to come out, but better they get it RIGHT than to rush it like microsoft rushed vista. 10.4.9 works perfectly well. I can wait a few months for the extra features that Leopard would offer :)
Sorry, but I'm running vista on my MBP. The 'reviews' you've been reading have apparently been written by the "Vista has to be bad, so we'll report that" crowd. I've not had it crash on me yet (and I use it daily under Boot Camp at work). As for its UI, it may be eye candy, but it looks better then XP does, it doesn't get in the way. In fact, I'd say they have about the same amount and type of eye-candy that OS X has.
Oh, and MS brought over their "Previous Versions" functionality they have in Server 2003 to various flavors of Vista, so I've got my Time Machine now (not that there's anything special about time machine a copy of SuperDuper couldn't solve).
Since the iPhone will be running Leopard, it's not just "one new piece of hardware." The OS must be first place for the hardware to be successful; it's not a zero-sum game between the two.
Maybe they're tightening it up. No one wants a phone that gives errors, shows a multi-colored pinwheel, or freezes. Be hopeful a faster leopard is gestating.
