Though it's a little late in the game for US residents, some users are reporting repeated unexpected quits of Intuit TurboTax 2005

If you are experiencing this problem try the following procedure:

  1. Delete all TurboTax related files, including:
    • the TurboTax application folder (located in /Applications by default)
    • ~/Library/Preferences/com.intuit.turbotax2005.plist
    • ~/Library/Preferences/Turbotax 2005 Preferences
  2. Open the Date & Time pane of System Preferences.
  3. Uncheck the box: Set Date and Time Automatically if it is checked.
  4. Change the system date to January 1st, 2006 and click the Save button.
  5. Re-install TurboTax 2005, but do not attempt to run it.
  6. Open the Date & Time pane of System Preferences and reset the time and date to the current, correct setting. Check the Set Date and Time Automatically box if desired.
  7. Download all six updates available from this TurboTax support site and install them.

If you do your own taxes (most users of TurboTax DO), it is not too late, especially when certain items/deductions show up in working through the 2006 TT that were not asked about in the 2005 TT, necessitating filing an amended return for 2005.

TurboTax 2005 worked fine until very recently - I don't know what changed. However, I too recently experienced TurboTax 2005 crashing upon launch as described. After reading your recommendation for a fix, I checked the TurboTax Web site and found this:

    http://support.turbotax.intuit.com/cgi-bin/turbotax.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=942&p_sid=Zt9hAkzi&p_lva=2490&bnRank=3#

Intuit recommends downloading the latest update and installing it. It is in 6 parts, so you need to install them in 6 separate installs, in order. And after you expand the compressed .hqx files, don't worry that the installer file names end in ".exe" for some reason. Despite what they look like, they are Mac executables, not Windows files.

So instead of following your detailed recommended fix, I tried this easier fix, which worked. So I recommend trying this first. Of course if this doesn't work for you, then you can do the detailed re-install outlined in the original post.

I had this problem last night (before this post) and really needed the information from 2005. I ended up finding my 2005 Turbotax CD and re-installed it (dragged the folder from the CD). That worked.

go to this page, download them in order and install in order. Be sure that 2005 turbotax is back in the application folder. make sure you write down the file titles so that you can install them in numerical order!

Curious, folks.. This has happened to us too but I'm linking it to other issues. Both the "fix" here and reinstallation are the shotgun approach to troubleshooting- the common changes in our systems (one PPC and one Intel CoreDuo) was the 10.4.9 update- read the report log of the crash and see which components are being pointed out and what system changes have taken place. .plist files don't just go bad across several computers in the home or across the net- outside events affect that change.

I think Turbo Tax 2006 caused this problem. After updating to the latest 2006, 2005 quit on me. I am still running 10.4.5.

The people experiencing this must be ones who are reinstalling TurboTax 2005 or who filed their returns before all "updates" were available.

These same crashes occurred for me last year and I had to manually install the six patches to get my 2005 return out last April.
