QuickTime 7.2: Inability to playback Flash content, fix

by CNET staff

If you are experiencing an inability to playback Adobe Flash content embedded in Web pages after updating to QuickTime 7.2, QuickTime may be attempting to play your Flash content. Apple's QuickTime has the ability to play Flash content embedded in QuickTime movies and in Web pages via the QuickTime plug-in but this option turned off by default, as it is not compatible with as many embedded Flash media types as the true Adobe plug-in.

Make sure that QuickTime is not attempting to play your Flash content by following these steps:

  1. Open the QuickTime pane in System Preferences
  2. Click on the Advanced tab.
  3. Deselect checkbox next to Enable Flash in order to turn the option on.
  4. Next, click on the MIME Settings button and scroll down to Miscellaneous -- Miscellaneous file formats
  5. Click the checkbox to turn the option off (it will turn to a - from a check)
  6. Click on the disclosure triangle to show the options for miscellaneous file formats. Make sure that the Flash media is turned off.

Unfortunately, my system won't let me turn off QuickTime HTML in Advanced. Clicking on the checkbox does nothing. To turn off the Flash media setting requires me to hold the control key while selecting the box. This is very weird.

Flash Media is the one you want to disable.

"Make sure that the Flash media and QuickTime HTML (QHTM) are turned off"

Sorry, but it will not allow you to turn off Quicktime HTML (QHTM). The other MIME settings work fine as far as turning them on or off, but this one refuses to be disabled.

Same here. MBP 2.0GHz, OSX 10.4.10, QT 7..1.6 (I had to roll back using Pacifist due to the Rosetta issue).

I can't turn off QuickTime HTML (QHTM) either. The others are turned off by default.
Incidentally, on my system (PPC 10.4.10) SMIL 1.0 comes at the top of the Advanced list and Flash media at the bottom.

If you can't deselect Flash, try selecting the "Use Defaults" button. If Flash is disabled by default, this should fix your problem. hope this helps.

This never worked for me because the "OK" button remained dimmed and the only way to close preferences was to select the cancel button.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

aha... the original example image has changed... or am I going nuts I am sure the MIME Settings sample image had QuickTime HTML (QHTM) deselected.

I think they have changed the instruction (the reference to QuickTime HTML has been deleted) rather than changed the image. The instruction is now slightly garbled, since step 5 "Click the checkbox to turn the option off (it will turn to a - from a check)" doesn't make much sense. You should do Step 6 if necessary and then the checkbox next to Miscellaneous will change to a "-".
