Safari: now for Windows

by CNET staff

Claiming that they have built the fastest Windows browser to date, Apple today announced that it has developed and will begin shipping Safari as a Windows application.

Apple says that the impetus behind the release is a desire to parlay the success of iTunes (which has been downloaded 500 million times by Windows users) into a different market space.

A public beta is available from http://www.apple.com/safari.

What are your thoughts on this development?

Installed and so far working OK on my MacBook Pro (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running 10.4.9--which is the minimum OS.

Installed on Gateway 4100 (2.4GHz P4 HT) with Windows XP Pro SP2. Seems fast, but font display on Macfixit and CNN pages is ugly compared with Firefox 2.0.0.4 (looks too "bold" perhaps?). Also, Safari didn't import any bookmarks from Firefox or IE 5, automatically or manually (exported bookmarks to desktop).

I bet it's a feature they're going to be adding in the iPhone. (a la iTunes and iPod) which needs to use Safari....

I don't see what Safari on Windows has to do with the iPhone, which runs OS X. Though I'm sure Apple has some ulterior motive other than the obvious, which is to follow up iTunes success and insinuate itself further into the Windows sphere of influence. It can't hurt, as they say.

I downloaded and installed Safari in Windows XP running in Parallels on my Mac Pro. It looks just fine. If the text rendering looks bad, choose another font in Safari's preferences. I prefer Verdana - it looks good on both platforms and in all circumstances. It takes some time to get used to seeing Mac programs like iTunes and Safari in Windows, using Windows menu styles and such. To my eyes they look a little kludgy, but I guess that can't be helped. They also look rather Spartan compared to the Windows eye candy in Explorer and Windows Media Player. Not necessarily a bad thing, but definitely different.

Does anyone else find this ironic?
    From http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/internetexplorer/internetexplorer.aspx?pid=internetexplorer
"In June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005. In accordance with published support lifecycle policies, Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and is not providing any further security or performance updates.

Accordingly, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac is no longer available for download from Microsoft. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari."

Now today, Apple releases Safari for Windows. It will be interesting to see how this begins to affect web statistics.

    And for those wondering,

And for those wondering, I'm using the beta of Safari on Windows to write this up.

(Got called away from the keyboard on the last entry.)

I just installed Safari 3.0 on Windows XP under Parallel's. In fact, I am using it right now to write this. It worked so GREAT under 10.4.9, I felt compelled to try it under Windows. Starts fast and renders fast. Very cool to see it here on XP. Works fine on all sites so far. No display issues like some have reported.

Although only officially supported on Win XP and Vista, it installed and seems to work reasonably well on my Win 2K box.

So let me get this straight...
Windows users will get Safari 3(the final version) for free, but us Mac users will have to pony up $129 to get it, because it won't run on my brand new iMac until I upgrade to Leopard.
Thanks Apple. Way to keep in touch with your loyal fans.

According to Apple download page for Safari 3 beta the system requirements are Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later.

Nowhere has Apple said that it will charge for the web browser.

That makes it $130. That is problem of all OS default browsers though.

Windows previous version (XP) is supported, some guy says he runs it in Win2k smoothly but on OS X, the browser demands latest major release along with latest update.

    Lets see:
    - Most Mac users I know don't use it on their Macs, in favor of Opera, Camino and Firefox.
    - Safari isn't compliant with the last couple versions of HTML or XTML and has problems on way too many sites,
    - Safari won't work on any banking sites of any consequence.
    - Safari is full of security holes too numerous to count.
    - Safari is just down right buggy, always has been.

What idiot on a Win box would possibly want to install. let alone use Safari !!?? This is just another juvenile slap at Bill Gates by Jobs (this feud is getting out of control). It makes no other sense to do this otherwise, since Safari isn't required for the iPhone on a PC.

Personally, my primary browsers on all my Macs are Camino and Opera ... I deleted Safari and Mail (I use Entourage).
