Apple has released About AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n firmware version 7.1.1, which includes all fixes in Firmware 7.1 plus additional compatibility updates for the AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n, including enhancements in these areas:

  • Printers and Routers, VPN, PPPoE, WDS(ACL), WEP(TSN)
  • Localized file naming, port mapping, IPv6, and NAS
  • Improved stability with keychain passwords
  • Improved support for third party applications saving files to a USB disk
  • Improved support for AirPort USB disk stability and power saving, disk read/write performance, disk file sharing and passwords
  • Addressed an issue where Base Station would not request a password when expected

This update requires AirPort Utility 5.1. Check if you have version 5.1 by going to /Applications/Utilities and clicking on the AirPort Utility icon, then selecting Get Info from the FIle menu and inspecting the version number. If you have version 5.0, you can update by installing AirPort Base Station Update 2007-001.

AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n Firmware 7.1.1 is available as a 4.6 MB standalone download.

The link from this site, as well as from Apple's download page, goes to an instruction page. However, there's no actual download link. Running the 5.1 utility and choosing the update option gives me a message that there isn't any available. Maybe this isn't quite released yet?

...because the moment I launched my Airport Utility 5.1 earlier today it asked if I wanted to upload the 7.1.1 firmware.

Apple doesn?t make clear that this update is only for those whose computers are capable of running .11n. Only the latest Intel computers are capable of doing that. If you have an older computer using .11g, this update doesn?t apply to you.

    Of course it DOES

this update is for the AirportBase Station itself. Whatever Mac you have, you should install this firmware upadte on your AirportBase Station!

You are correct. I have been at this long enough to know that firmware updates are not available through Software Update, but completely forgot about that.

I went into Airport Utility and did the update there.

I had issues with my Canon S750 and my usb2 hard drive, both connected to my AirportBase Station via a powered usb hub.

When I disconnected the hard drive (or powered it off), the access to the printer was loss and I had to power off then on the AirportBase to regain access to the printer.

I hoped that installing the new 7.1.1 Airport Extreme Base firmware, would solve this kind of issue. But as you can guess, it's not the case

Now when the Airport disk is mounted on my Mac desktop, whenever I launch a print job on the Airport printer, an error message araises stating that the Airport disk has been disconnected and ejected.... and I don't have access to it, neither to the printer (and the printing process is stopped and un-resumable)

I have to power off then on (after a few seconds) the Airport Base Station to regain access to my printer or my Airport disk!

Anyone knows how to reinstal the previous firmware (or even the precedent one which was more convenient to me....) ???
