Safari 3.0 beta (#6): Reminder: Remove Input Managers; Check for add-on updates; iChat slowness

Reminder: Remove Input Managers Perhaps the single most effective and broadly applicable fix (as previously recommended) for a bevy of issues under Safari 3.0 beta -- ranging from persistent crashes to problems loading pages to failure to launch -- is to delete any and all Input Managers.

This can be accomplished by quitting Safari then emptying the following directories:

  • /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/
  • Library/InputManagers
  • ~/Library/InputManagers

If you like, you can then place items back one by one or in groups and relaunch Safari, checking for recurrence of the issue in order to isolate the problematic component.

Take the following exemplary case from MacFixIt reader Tony Lucente:

Safari 3 would always crash while loading tabs. Also, I always had to reload pages about 3 times. I removed Safari Stand ~/Library/Input Managers and now everything works great.

Check for add-on updates It is also worth mentioning that many Input Managers and other Safari add-ons have been revised since Safari 3.0 Beta's release for compatibility. Check our sister-site VersionTracker for the latest updates.

iChat slowness A number of readers have reported significant lag in sending and receiving instant messages in iChat after applying the Safari 3.0 beta update.

In some cases, these problems are due to third-party iChat add-ons like Chax or ChatFX. Try disabling or uninstalling these products and check for elimination of the issue.

In other cases, only uninstalling Safari 3.0 beta resolves the problem.

OK, for those experiencing iChat slowness, I have the cure :-) I experienced the same thing, while I can't take credit for this tip as I saw it posted on the apple discussion forums for the S3b release, I can take credit for spreading the word.

Apparently the safari webkit is repsonsible for the screen draw in ichat as well as many other things, which is why the install is affecting the seemingly unconnected ichat.

You can "Force" iChat out of its stall when sending by hitting a key (any key) after you hit enter to send. Obviously a key that is associated with a character will begin a new thought bubble, so I hit "shift."

Works for me. as soon as you see it stalling, just hit "shift" and it'll force it through (probably has something to do with the fact that it then has to focus on drawing the "thought bubble").

The key press trick works, I just hit return again. I don't use the fancy bubbles, just the boxes, so it's not that aspect.

Is this related to audio problems? the video seems to work fine, but there isn't any audio anymore, even with people that I spoke to without problems just before I installed safari 3b
