Mac OS X 10.4.10 Update v1.1 released: Includes Audio Update 2007-001 -- fix for repeated pops

by CNET staff

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.4.10 Update v1.1, which incorporates Audio Update 2007-001 a separately available download. The only change in Mac OS X 10.4.10 Update v1.1 relative to the initial Mac OS X 10.4.10 release is the inclusion of Audio Update 2007-001. If you already applied Mac OS X 10.4.10, you only need to install Audio Update 2007-001. Also, these updates are only for Intel-based Macs.

Per Apple's release notes, this update directly addresses the "popping" noise issue we covered here, here and here. Apple says:

"The Audio Update 2007-001 addresses an issue with version 1.0 of the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Update in which a 'popping' sound might be heard with some external speakers on Intel-based Mac. This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macs running Mac OS X 10.4.10."

The popping seems to have gone but no luck with the USB problems. The mic on the webcam still doesn't work since updating to 10.4.10

Yep fixed my audio problem. Now if I could just use my USB hard drives as well as two other co-workers using theirs this would all be good. The audio must have been an easy fix. I tried the Pacifist rollback earlier but that did not fix the USB either.

when I back graded the kexts to 10.4.9 versions per recommendations,I had problems with my built in isight mic on a 20" C2D iMac, .
re running the combo updater for 10.4.10 resolved the microphone problem
    good luck

What? Still no fix for USB hard drives?? Oh, but the audio will quit popping... ?sheesh, glad to see Apple has it's priorities straight... no more popping audio, but you still can't load up vital USB hard drives that can truly hinder workflow for most ppl...

Ubuntu is starting to look better and better....

    Yeah, go Ubuntu...
Your USB doesn't work, so Apple has a problem?
I've updated over a dozen Macs so far with ZERO USB issues, whereas the whole lot had the popping issue.
    You ever think that:
    1) It's not wide-spread
    2) It's harder to fix since there are so many devices?

    Sheesh. Got o Ubuntu already...

No, not just MY USB... MANY people had (and are still having problems) with USB... uh, buddy... that's why they released attempted fixes... because there IS a problem.

Yes, APPLE has a problem. Sorry, I expect more from Apple at this point.

But, I guess sheep like you will eat anything that's thrown at you, huh?

I am running v10.4.10 on my 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo 2GB MBP, and am *not* experiencing any of the problems mentioned (USB drives, audio). Should I skip this "audio" upgrade?

I am using an early Intel iMac Core Duo and I did not have any pops once the computer was up and running prior to the update with OS 10.4.10. I did, and still do, have a chain of pops coming from my external speakers when I wake the computer up from sleep. The audio update did not correct that issue. Otherwise I note no difference before or after the update. Color me disappointed ;)

I wasn't having any audio pop problems either. For what it's worth, I applied the audio update without any ill effect. Interestingly, I was having a skipping problem near the beginning of audio tracks in iTunes after the OS X 10.4.10 update, but the iTunes 7.3 update fixed that. The skipping problem seems to come and go from one update to the next. Never sure what causes it.

Now sound played by thirdparty apps like VLC or Whamb are interrupted
every 60 instead of 30 seconds.

Got a fierce sound glitch from the "file moved" sound event switching
the headphone output off/on while playing music with itunes.

wlan is gone here and there.
and the keyboard seems to go to sleep, too. very strange. almost every
first typed char in chat window or form input field is dropped.

Seemed yesterday when I applied the patch, everything was fine, but this
day the popping returned... Very weird and depressing.

I am wondering why the sound problems only arise with thirdparty products. Looks like a incompatibility for me. But the Apple developers know this. Or why are all Apple apps like Itunes and Safari running smoothly without Sound- or WLAN problems?
