Audio pops continue after Audio Update 2007-001: a followup

by CNET staff

Some readers continue to report an audio popping, starting with the 10.4.10 system update, even after the application of Audio Update 2007-001 (or 10.4.10 v.1.1, which contains the Audio Update). One reader writes:

I had the pop when I updated to 10.4.10, and I sent feedback to Apple to explain the problem (as many other people did). Then, I applied the Audio Update 2007-001, and it is still popping. A little bit less, but it is still there; I hear pops, while listening to music (and pops are NOT in the music), and when there is no sound.

Other users experience popping, not on an Intel machine (which is the only type addressed by the Audio Update 2007-001), but on a PowerPC:

I have not experienced the audio popping on my Intel MacBook Pro, but I have been getting it on my 1.8GHZ G5 tower (through the external speakers).

We don't have any clear fix for these lingering problems, and we'd like to get a sense of how the matter now stands, since this was one of the most irritating setbacks of the 10.4.10 update. Please let us know if you are still experiencing audio anomalies.

I am glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I've looked on the web, but now I am just not plugging my MBP 17" into the stereo @home.

This is sad if not pathetic. Apple has always claimed their advantage lies in controlling both the hardware and software in the computers. Yet here they seem to have been "out of control" for some time, since Macs have long had problems with audio function.

I hope this serves Mac users as a useful lesson: never update to the next level of OS until it has reached the ".5" revision. (As in 10.4.5) If there are still major problems with the ".5" - then just skip that release altogether. Look at the trouble people would have saved if they'd just stuck with 10.3.9!

I am patient - more than willing to continue saving money (and time, and aggravation) until Apple starts shipping Macs with Leopard installed.
