Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 (#2): Fan speed differences in effect, USB problems

by CNET staff

[Published Thursday, August 9th]

Fan speed differences in effect Apple's release notes indicate that Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 "adjusts fan behavior in the Mac Pro," and users are certainly noticing the changes.

MacFixIt reader Peter writes:

"Installed this update. Now the fans rev at very high speed for about 1 minute whenever I wake my computer from sleep."

Apple didn't provide any reasoning behind the fan adjustment, but it would seem that Mac Pros are attempting to keep themselves cooler after the update.

RAID array doesn't need to be disconnected? Unlike, previous Mac Pro firmware updates, it appears that attched RAID arrays do not need to be disconnected in order for this release to properly install, desptie Apple's warning: "If you are starting up using a RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) subsystem, you must attach a Macintosh formatted storage device to apply this update."

One MacFixIt reader writes:

"I have a RAID array, and unlike the last SMC update, I did not need to use a separate startup disk to install this."

USB issues Some users are reporting problems with USB connectivity after applying Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1. One reader writes:

"I just installed the new Mac Pro firmware on my 8 core mac pro. Install went fine, upon reboot, my USB devices (namely keyboard and mouse. ) do not work they recieve power and show up in apple system profiler but they do not accept any input. A Bluetooth keyboard works but not USB. I booted into windows to see if it was the USB ports but they work fine un windows. Attempting now to download the combo 10.4.10 installer to see if that might solve the problem."

In some cases, routine cache cleaning can resolve USB connectivity issues. Try using a utility like Tiger Cache Cleaner to do a deep clean of system caches, restart, and re-attach your USB device.

You can also try resetting PRAM/NVRAM. In order to reset PRAM/NVRAM, shut down your Mac, then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.

I also have this problem, I found that just relunching the finder fixes it, but it is happening at least once a day so far.

That is the USB problem I was talking about.

I was able to install the update with no problem.

But now my fans are staying above 2000 rpms all the time. (They never did before - only occasionally when my room got too hot - I work in an attic.)

Looking at a sensor app - my CPU fan and my rear fan are the guilty parties. Is this because I maxed out my ram? (16 gigs). I installed Apple RAM so as to not have any problems.

But the noise is intolerable. I'm a musician and I can't work with a small jet engine running 10 feet away from me.

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

so in shortcut, after smc FW 1.1 update my fans are permanently on 2800rpm (two of them CPU and rear), they do not react witch software like a smcfancontrol or fan control. i'v done PRam reset... smc reset too (15 seconds without power cable) no changes... one big extremely noise.

I've had almost the identical experience to durdles. As a wedding photographer, my clients receive animated "on-line slideshows" of their photos with music .
Timing the animation to the music is difficult is when I am struggling to hear the music over the fan noise.

Mac fans are constantly at 2800 rpm. Not only is the computer unusable for me, the people in the next room can't watch television. Are there any fixes or workarounds anyone has found? Can you revert to an earlier firmware version? Class action suit?

Right after the Mac Pro Firmware Update 1.1 on my 3.0GHz Quad the fans went full blast (+/- 2800 rpm) permanently. I took it to the Apple Store twice. Apparently the Firmware Update can not be reversed and no other fixes (p-ram zap, software fan adjustment, etc). work. They found no problems with the hardware. I had to leave the computer at the store. It looks like the motherboard has to be replaced to fix the fan problem. Thank god the machine is under warranty. The capable genius at the store told me that with every firmware upgrade they see some scares machine come in with problems.

Just got the machine back from the Apple store. It turned out the 3rd party ram was the culprit. (The ram passed the hardware test before and was working fine before the firmware upgrade) With the 2 1gig sticks removed the fans are quiet as before. OWC will replace the ram for free.

After the firmware update, my Apple keyboard volume control stops working intermittently. It displays a crossed-out circle icon that shows up when I try to adjust it.
