iMovie '08 (#3): A simple fix for some crashes
We continue to report on an issue where iMovie crashes shortly after attempting to update (import) movies in the iPhoto library, and crashes at other times during routine operation or at launch.
Before trying more drastic workarounds, here's an easy and quick fix that has proven successful for a number of readers:
Quit iMovie, then navigate to the directory ~/Library/Preferences and delete the following files (drag them to the Trash):
- com.apple.iApps.plist
- com.apple.iMovie7.plist (if it exists)
Re-launch iMovie '08 (7.0.1) and check for persistence of the issue.
Poor export quality Some users are experiencing poor video quality when exporting media using the "Gallery" function, which publishes to .Mac.
MacFixIt reader Gary writes:
"Apart from Apple leaving out chapter additions and audio editing within the video stream, it appears many people are importing DV and HD-DV video into iMovie, editing the video, and experiencing problems with the quality of the video when exporting to the new Gallery feature."
"It appears that there is a bug which exports all video irrespective screen resolution as very low bitrate files. So a (Large) 960x540 video resolution file will output a video stream as a little over 300kbps, whereas a Tiny Video transmits roughly the same. So individuals are experiencing intermittent quality issues being reported all over the Apple Discussion forums on their website."
