Apple Aluminum keyboards: Problems with startup commands

by CNET staff

Several readers are reporting issues with startup commands when using the new Aluminum Apple keyboards (introduced alongside and shipping with the Mid-2007 iMacs). Most of the reports come from Intel-based Macs other than the new iMacs.

MacFixIt reader Roland Kiefer writes:

"After installing the Keyboard Update 1.1 and using the new wired aluminum Keyboard with my iMac Intel 20" (2006) I can't boot either into single user modus (cmd-s) nor from a hard drive connected by FireWire (via option ALT)."

Another reader writes:

"I bought the new Apple Keyboard (wired) and hooked up to my Rev.A MacBook Pro (2.16GHz Core Duo). Tried to perform some startup key sequences like OPT, CMD-S, CMD-V and even T for Target Mode but my MBP went straight to the Apple startup logo. But I did not have any issue with the new Mac mini (2.0GHz Core 2 Duo) and first generation PPC-based Mac mini. Brought it down to a Apple service centre and confirm my findings that Core Duo Macs can't work the startup key sequences. Tried with a few Core Duo and Core 2 Duo Macs, and startup key sequences only work with the latter."

If this indeed turns out to be a widespread issue, firmware updates may need to be released and applied to older Macs in order to properly use startup commands with the new keyboards.

A bit off-topic, but is it possible to cold boot the Mac from the new Apple aluminiym keyboards? The i-Cue (USB Boot Dongle) worked with older Macs, but not new ones:

This is very strange; I don't have an Apple Aluminum keyboard, but I experience an identical set of problems to those described in the column
when trying to boot my Macmini from the internal 160Gb drive using an old Microsoft Wireless Natural Multimedia keyboard, BUT, when I boot the Macmini from an external Firewire drive cloned from my MacBook, shift for Safe Boot mode works, holding space to select a boot drive / partition works, but Apple-S for single-user mode doesn't. I also noticed that the old Microsoft Wireless Mouse worked on my Macmini with no driver software installed, but the keyboard would not function until I installed the Microsoft (spit) Desktop software.

A little tip: with the wireless mouse working and not having a wired keyboard of any kind available to me, I used the Keyboard Viewer to type (read click) admin passwords etc. until I got the Microsoft (spit) Desktop software and a couple of mission critical applications installed; not recommended for typing your next novel or other magnum opus, but OK for passwords etc. and it got me out of a self-created bind, having gifted wired keyboards and older systems to my beloved daughter who lives a 2.5 hour drive away.

Running 10.4.10 on each drive, and similar, but by no means identical applications on each drive.

I also have a problem with the "option" key when starting up and the "C" key when selecting a start-up drive, like my OS DVD when I couldn't get my 320gb USB external HD to mount, suddenly that will not mount...

All else works well, dashboard, expose...

iMac 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 20 in., OS 10.4.10
    ATI Radeon X1600-128MB SDRAM
    1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM-2 x 512
    250GB Serial ATA drive

NEW aluminum keyboard, may resort BACK to he oldie...
