InDesign CS3 crashes when opening/saving files or launching in Leopard -- fixes

Several users have reported an issue where InDesign CS3 crashes when attempting to open or save certain files or when launching the application under Mac OS X 10.5.x (though the latter may be conflated with the former, i.e. users invoking an application launch by opening afflicted files).

MacFixIt reader Stephen Carr writes:

"Under Mac OS X 10.5.1, InDesign CS3 crashes every time I use the Open File command. No problem clicking on individual files or opening via Bridge. I have trashed permissions - started up in Safe Mode - created a New User Admin Account in OSX. I even resorted to reinstalling the Premium Suite. Downloaded a script file that rectifies a problem in the update to Version Cue 3.01. Still no joy. Searched the forums, people are submitting crash reports to Adobe and Apple - no joy. Some are suggesting a Clean Install of Leopard might solve the problem "

The script to which Stephen refers is mentioned in this Adobe tech note, which states "After you install the Adobe Version Cue CS3 3.1.0 update (Creative Suite 3 products) may crash when you attempt to save, open, or place a file on Mac OS X." The script ameliorates an issue with the VersionCueUI.framework file that is apparently caused during installation. Per Stephen's note, however, this fix is not always successful.

In some cases, the problem may be a font conflict, potentially caused by Suitcase Fusion auto-activating fonts that are already installed and activated by Leopard. Try removing duplicate fonts from /Library/Fonts, restarting your Mac, then re-opening the afflicted InDesign files, or temporarily disabling Suitcase Fusion.

In other cases, the fix may be more tedious: Remove the entire Adobe CS3 suite, create a new administrator account, and re-install the suite under the new account.

We've received word that Adobe plans an update in January to fix CS3-related bugs in Leopard. For a guide to CS3/Leopard compatibility, see this Adobe PDF document.
