Video not playing after QuickTime 7.4 update

Several users are experiencing an issue where various QuickTime media (including movies embedded in Web pages) cannot be played after applying the QuickTime 7.4 update. Some users get audio but no video, while others get video but no audio. One reader writes:

"Upgraded to QT 7.4 (Pro). Am running 10.4.11 on a 2.2 GHZ Core 2 Duo and cannot see QuickTime content on Apple's site, at least. All of the ads, including the new Air ad, either don't display or show the QuickTime logo."

Traditional fixes for similar issues include:

  • Reinstall QuickTime
  • Remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
  • Remove QuickTime Plugin.plugin (from /Library/Internet Plugins)
  • search for conflicting, third-party plugins and remove them

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

MacFixit keeps recommending that people remove the QuickTime plugin to fix issues. Doesn't MacFixit realize that removing that plugin means users will NEVER be able to view QuickTime content in their browsers again? This is simply bad advice to be giving users who are having problems. They should be looking at third party plugins like DivX for example. Or Perian, or any other of the myriad third party stuff that can and have caused trouble with QuickTime updates in the past. Less knowledgeable users may not even remember installing this stuff.

And yes, for the record as usual, I'm not seeing any such issues on my system. The updates installed without issue and everything is working fine.

Let me just echo what you said...

"And yes, for the record as usual, I'm not seeing any such issues on my system. The updates installed without issue and everything is working fine."

Is there any evidence that the reported QT problems afflict only certain setups? I'm running a fully updated Tiger G5 iMac. Maybe this only applies to Macintel or Leopard? Just a thought.

    I have a PPC G5 2@2ghz Tiger 10.4.11 1gb RAM, 1TB HD.

I've tested all of mine (unprotected MP4 files) and they do not play on my Mac. Further testing indicates it also doesn't play with QuickTime directly (by finding the file in the iTunes folder).

It does play from VLC so it's a problem with the QT plug-in. It also won't play in FireFox via the QT plugin, reporting a QT logo with the flashing "?" error.

I removed DiVX component and that did not correct the problem. All symptoms remained the same.

I've also noted that only files in my iTunes library are affected. I wonder if the upgraded munged something?

I've tested all of my movies (unprotected MP4 files) and they do not play on my Mac. Further testing indicates they also doesn't play with QuickTime directly by finding the file in the iTunes folder using QT Player. This is NOT an iTunes problem as I've seen some people say on other boards but definitely a QT problem.

The same "broken" movies do play from VLC so it's a problem with the QT plug-in and/or codec file(s). The "broken" also won't play in FireFox via the QT plug-in, reporting a QT logo with the flashing "?" error.

I removed DiVX component and that did not correct the problem. All symptoms remained the same. I tried this because DiVX is famously bad for breaking things. Further, the old standby of deleting preferences files has not changed thing.

Running QT player or Running iTunes and then opening the movie requires force quit. Running it from with a browser doesn't lock it up, though.

Movies NOT in the iTunes directory were not affected and play normally leading me to suspect it might a problem with multiple causes.

I hope this help someone figure it out.

And, I have a friend with a PC (Windoze) and it does the same thing on his. This is a BIG problem. More and more posts appearing over at Apple.COM about this.

Funny. On the same day the new Quicktime came out, there was also an update for DivX Pro to 6.7.1. Movies wouldn't play for me in Safari, but I just had to remove the DivX video plugin (again). They always seem to conflict.

Reinstalling Quicktime 7.4 worked for me.

I had problems viewing the QT movies on the Apple site in SeaMonkey after the upgrade, and moving com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist to the Trash fixed the problem - just revisiting the page was enough to see the movies. Replacing the old plist prevented QT movie play again. Now that I've deleted the old file the problem is apparently fixed for good.

    Thanks MacFixIt!

First of all, I agree, there is something problematic with Quicktime preferences after upgrade. A certain way of configuration may be issue.

Also, when we speak about "videos not playing", are we speaking about "Macbook Air" videos on Apple.com ? They seem to hide controller (play/pause ,progressbar) via file metadata (it is possible) for the first time. So a "white window" without any controller appearing may be understood as plugin not working.

Check this for instance to see what I talk about:

    That should be:

    "Remove ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist"

Some videos work for me. But not those in this format: "Apple MPEG4 Decompressor". Those in "H.264 Decoder", for example, work.

I haven't yet tried the recommended fixes.
