Pages 3.0.2: fixes Helvetica, page size problem

[Wednesday, January 30th]

Apple's paltry release notes for Pages 3.0.2 initially left the purpose of the update a mystery. but we've now learned of a few specific enhancements.

Pages 3.0.2 appears to fix a problem where Helvetica Narrow appears as a substitute for the standard Helvetica font.

One reader writes:

"Just installed 3.0.2 on an intel Mac running 10.5.1. It seems to have fixed the maddening bug with Helvetica fonts."

The update also resolves an issue where page content shrinks down to an illegible size when comments are included (text occupies only a thin strip in the center of the page, leaving most of the area unused).

Also, several users have reported that documents open much more quickly under Pages 3.0.2 relative to previous iterations.

Maybe Apple doesn't know what the updates fix. They're waiting for people to stop complaining and then they'll release the statement detailing what's not an issue anymore.

In the new Numbers 1.02 I get a missing Helvetica neue font error message every time I open it. Yet I can see the font on my computer.

I think the reason Apple so rarely provides information on what an update fixes is because they don't like to admit problems. This is a customer hostile attitude but avoids the cases where customers might complain that the fix doesn't fix what it's supposed to. It's a very defensive posture matched by few other software developers. Even Microsoft discloses more, though, admittedly, they generally have more to disclose.

Doesn't fix this for me on my Dual 1.4.2 Ghz Mirrored Door G4 PPC, must be an intel fix. Get the missing font warning every time I open it.

It's not just PPC. I still have the Helvetica problem on an Intel iMac with 10.5.1.
