QuickTime 7.4.1: Problems starting up/logging in; fixes After Effects problem

by CNET staff

Problems starting up/logging in Several users have reported problems starting up or logging in to their user accounts after installing QuickTime 7.4.1. In some cases, the sequence of events is as folows: user installs QuickTime 7.4.1 via Software Update, then clicks the required Restart button, at which point the system freezes. The user forces a restart only to be greeted with a message indicating that no bootable device is available. Restarting again may result in the appearance of Setup Assistant over and over again.

This issue is reminiscent of a Setup Assistant startup loop afflicting a previous security update and a previous iteration of QuickTime.

The first thing to try in this case (if you are in the Setup Assistant loop) is to simply choose "Shutdown" from within Setup Assistant. This may cause the QuickTime installer to resume or re-apply and a normal restart to occur.

The next recommended procedure is to simply boot in Safe Mode -- accomplished by holding down the Shift key while your Mac is starting up. After the safe boot, restart normally. A number of maintenance tasks are performed during the safe boot, and you might not need to perform any additional troubleshooting. You might receive a message indicating that the update has finished installing after performing the safe boot.

Failing the aforementioned, peruse our tutorial titled "Startup fails (particularly after a system or security update); solving." One of the solutions listed there -- including delete specific caches, rooting out problematic kernel extensions, repairing drive damage, and disconnecting external devices -- might prove successful.

If worse comes to worst, you may need to resinstall the system (even though reinstalling the system isn't that bad), via our tutorial.

Problems with playback? Remove third-party plug-ins/components If you experience issues with playback of any previously working media files, check the following directories:

  • /Library/QuickTime
  • ~/Library/QuickTime
  • /Library/Internet Plug-ins

for any third-party plug-ins or components. Temporarily remove them, restart and check for resolution of the issue. You can then isolate the problematic plug-in(s)/component(s).

Fixes After Effects issues Although Apple doesn't mention the improvement in release notes, QuickTime 7.4.1 resolves an issue where After Effects causes all renders to crash within 10 minutes of starting and displays the error message "you do not have permissions to open this file (-54) very bad for folks producing material in After Effects."

    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone that has installed the new quicktime update also has the divx plugin installed as well, and what if any issues / and or problems happened.
    Thanks !

Yes, I do have the DivX plug-in installed, and have had no problems with QT 7.4.1 (yet).

Booting in "Safe Mode" does not work all that well--98 out of 100 times I cannot get any of the Macs I work on to recognize that I am trying to boot in Safe Mode, and I work on every model of Mac that supports 10.3-10.5. The first time I got a computer to recognize Safe Mode I almost fell out of my chair in surprise. As far as QuickTime goes I have learned NOT to update to a new version until it reaches at least the .2 (7.4.2 in the case of QuickTime 7.4) version. Apple (read Steve) needs to SLOW down the rate of development and nail all the bugs that they are inflicting on us. Given that no one here has reported an actual security attack via QuickTime maybe Apple needs to just get it to work right, along with all their other software which is proving to be bug-ridden.

Odd, I rarely have a problem getting a Mac to start up in Safe Mode. Are you sure you're holding down the Shift key right after startup/restart, before the screen lights up? You need to hold down the Shift key while the screen is still black, and keep it held down until the Apple logo appears. If successful, this is what you'll see:

? OS 10.2: I forget, but maybe same as OS 10.3
? OS 10.3: "Safe Boot" appears in black, in the "Mac OS X" startup splash screen; Mac boots to desktop.
? OS 10.4: Mac boots to the login window, where "Safe Boot" appears in red, above the list of users.
? OS 10.5: same as OS 10.4--Mac boots to the login window, where "Safe Boot" appears in red, above the list of users.

I had severe problems once I updated to QT 7.4.1 on a Macbook Pro. Computer would not restart - hung in a loop trying to restart. I did manage to get it restarted tried the Safe Mode to no avail. I then tried removing the files you that were suggested and then could not get the computer to shut down. Beware. Did a complete Time Machine restore. Thank goodness for TM.

No problems to report with 10.5.1 on a MacIntel.

Plug-ins for DivX and Mpeg still working fine too.

    Installed via the stand-alone installer

Fortunately, I have not had any issues with any previous software updates, including Quicktime. I just installed 10.5.2 and I am having the looping issue with Setup Assistant described here on my iMac G5. I'll have to see if the recommendation works when I get home.
