Apple TV software update "Take2" now available; bugs and fixes

by CNET staff

[Tuesday, February 12th]

The "Take2" software/firmware update for the Apple TV is now available. Primary new features in this free update include the ability to rent movies, download content directly to the set-top device, the addition of high-definition movies and the ability to view photos from computers, Flickr and .Mac Web Galleries.

Our sister site Crave will soon be posting a hands-on look at the new functionality. Meanwhile, users are reporting some bugs/missing features:

  • WiFi missing Some users' Apple TV units are not able to find local WiFi networks after the update. The solution is generally to unplug the unit for a few minutes, then plug it back in and resume operation.
  • Will not Play TV Shows TV shows are not playing for some users after the update. Users are receiving the error message "incorrect format," even for shows that were purchased from the iTunes store.
  • Incorrect listings Some users are reporting listing errors after the update. In particular, some TV shows are not grouped according to series, or show the series name instead of the episode name.
  • No video playlists There is still no music video playlist support in this release

Problems after applying the new update? Please let us know.

After installing the Take 2 update my Apple TV is stuck in a skewed horizontal mode, making it impossible to navigate. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would love to give an update on aTV2, but all evening last night I kept getting an error message that the update could not be downloaded - please try again later. This morning, the error is still there when I try to download.

Last night I figured it was demand and the servers being overwhelmed. Now, I am thinking that there is a problem of communication between my aTV and the servers.

Updated to 2.0 firmware and after paying for and downloading a TV series, received message 'Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content.' Double-checked parental controls and other functions - all working fine. TV Series episodes are lined up and waiting on the 'Your TV' ATV menu. ATV worked fine prior to release of 2.0. Called Apple tech support - said since I'm out of date (90 days) for AppleCare - buy support from us or too bad no soup for you. From messages on Apples ATV discussions forum, this is not an isolated problem; some kind of authorization glitch I guess.

Luckily for me, the update installed without any issues. I am somewhat disappointed with this new version.

The Music Video section not being able to shuffle or to have video is a playlist shuffle is still a bug that has yet to be resolved. This was the first bug I reported and it's still not fixed in version 2? Come on Apple.

I find the new interface blah. I loved the carousel of icons. Now it's just a grid of text links highlighting the rental stuff first.

I can't get HDMI audio for anything other than movies rented on Atv. Simpsons was great in 5.1 over my HDMI to TV, Coax to Receiver connection. But nothing else gave my receiver sound. Apple has done something with the audio portion, don't know what. I downgraded tonight. The interface was poor, the HD movies with 5.1 were stunning, but once I figure out how to get the 5.1 on movies I own on to my computer (I own them all)it honestly looks as good to me so I can live without HD rentals until I can start buying them off the Apple TV, and I like being able to hear my podcasts, music, and own videos through my surround receiver and not out of my poor tv speakers. Great ideas Apple, just poor workmanship on this update. Sorry.

Use "ACL Fix" (freeware), it works flawlessly.

I updated to 2.0 and now I can sync everything except music. My movies, TV shows, Photos sync without issue, so I know its not a network or firewall/port issue.
    Anyone else with this?
    Any thoughts?

I finally just removed the Apple TV from iTunes and list and re-configured from scratch with good results syncing music as well as the rest of my media.
