iTunes 7.6.1: improves compatibility with Apple TV 2.0; fixes freeze bug

by CNET staff

[Thursday, February 21st]

Apple has released iTunes 7.6.1, a minor update to the music playback, purchase and synchronization tool that "includes several bug fixes and improves compatibility with Apple TV software version 2.0."

The new release is available through Software Update, or as a standalone download.

UPDATE: Apple has now posted a Knowledge Base article explicating a specific fix in this update:

"In rare instances, iTunes 7.6 may become unresponsive during use. This issue may occur due to specific media within your iTunes Library. Solution: Update to iTunes 7.6.1."
We haven't noticed any iPhone or iPod touch-related enhancements in this release, but if you've found some, please let us know.

Just installed this latest version on my PC (IBM T43 Thinkpad). I only have only have 149 songs, and navigating by album cover is incredibly painful. It is slow, and hesitates as you attempt to scroll through album covers.

I had to resync my whole iTunes Library to my Apple TV 2.0 after this update.

I bought an Apple TV last Saturday, spent hours with Apple Care until Tuesday, when I returned the thing. iTunes could not sync with it; I got bogus port error messages; it finally insisted on a password that did not exist.
I had not opened the apple care box I bought with it. If I had, even tho the product was defective, I could not have gotten an apple care refund. That is truly disgusting.
This update confirms that the product was DOA - if apple care or me as a registered user knew to wait for the update, I would have. No one knew.
Apple TV is still primitive, though; very little content is available, esp. HD.

I do not agree with you that Apple TV is primitive. I live in Singapore where the iTunes Store is not available to buy or rent media. But I have mananged to accumulate over 350 plus movies that work beautifully with Apple TV. I am so pleased with the product which I have have had for over a year, last week I purchased a second one.
A pity about the DOA issue and the AppleCare, but they would change your unit if it was proven to be defective. Apple is good at that.
My only small gripe is that Internet radio is not an inbuilt feature, and that there is no iTunes store availability here, and the price was not reduced in line with the States. That being the case, I still bought a second unit.

Sorry, Apple. iTunes 7.6.1 does not fix the unresponsiveness problem. The UI still freezes after the first 9 seconds of any song, and remains unresponsive for over 1 minutes. And, with over 15Gb of songs in my library (each and every one ripped to .mp3 by an earlier version of your software), I am not about to go through them to find out which one(s) are the culprit.

The problem didn't exist before I updated to this version. You introduced the problem with 7.6 - you fix it.

Don't expect me to weed through 9000+ tracks to figure out a problem that was either caused by a fault in an earlier version of your software, or a fault in the current version of your software.
