[Friday, February 22nd]

Apple TV problems Users are reporting a series of issues with Apple TV after updating to iTunes 7.6.1, namely:

  • The Apple TV does not appear in the iTunes device list
  • Movies and other media stored on Macs cannot be played on the Apple TV, with the error messages "There are no movies on your AppleTV. Set up a connection [...]" or "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized." appearing

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

Missing library If you find that all of your music and other media is missing after the update to iTunes 7.6.1, try quitting the program then launching it again while holding the Shift key -- this will allow you to select the desired iTunes library. Look in ~/Music/ (in your user home directory) for folders that begin with "iTunes." Your old library may have been inadvertently renamed.

Poor MP3 playback Some users have reported that the audio quality of certain MP3 files is lackluster after the update to iTunes 7.6.1. If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

Podcasts won't play We've received reports of problems playing podcasts under iTunes 7.6.1. One reader writes:

"I had a problem with itunes until 7.6.1. Now whenever I try playing a podcast it's spinning wheel of death time. Only out is killing the computer by turning off the power."

I can't figure it out folks. I downloaded the iTunes 7.6.1 update that was released earlier today and now my AppleTV won't play any of my stored movies (i.e. purchases of both TV shows and Feature Films) in iTunes. I get a window that reads, in part, "There are no movies on your AppleTV. Set up a connection with iTunes, or purchase moviesfrom the iTunes store....". When I push the button to select one of my movies, it goes dark and just sits there, unresponsive, for a few moments and then up comes the window I just spoke about. Mind you that I am streaming all of my media to my AppleTV. It's been working flawlessly up until this "update". I can still play my rentals, but, thats it. All of my music plays correctly. Photos still work. Screensaver works. It's just all of my purchases, home movies and any ripped DVD's that I own. This happens on both of my AppleTV's. Anyone having this problem? Any suggestions?

    p.s.
I unplugged the device for about a minute and still have the same problem. Same goes for quitting iTunes and reopening it.

    p.s.s.
I'm also getting a window that reads, "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized". This even pops up on all my purchases through iTunes also. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. And now, I get one that reads, "Apple TV is not responding. Check that any firewall software is running on this computer has been set to allow communication port 3689."

Very strange thing happened when I went from iTunes 7.6 to 7.6.1 via Software Update. Of course, I had to repair permissions afterward, which is pretty standard on my Intel iMac with OS 10.4.11 for every iTunes update for quite a while. But then every start-up of the computer resulted in an annoying message that the system could not find my Epson Perfection 1660 Photo scanner -- which I haven't used in a year, though it sits at the ready, connected via a hub. (No, I wasn't trying to use it, but the computer seemed to think I needed to know it was missing -- about every 30 seconds!) The solution was to unplug the scanner (with the iMac shut down) and restart. Everything returned to normal.

Espon places a program that launches on startup that continually scans for your scanner, and it seems it's been screwed up by the update (or could have just happened simultaneously.)

You find it by going to systems preferences (apple in the menu), check on accounts, and then startup items. You'll see it in there, remove it and you should be able to get rid of your problem. However, as this is the program that scans for the scanner being turned on and launching the scanning program automatically, you will have to go into applications and launch maunally either epson scan or epson scanner monitor when you want to scan.

If you like the automatic feature and want it back, you can try reinstalling the espon scanner software or see if there's an update on their website. That will place the scanner monitor back into your startup settings under accounts under system prefereces.

There is a chance that the update screwed it up somehow.

    Hope this helps.

My Apple TV is not showing up in iTunes device list following iTunes update to 7.6.1. I have reinstalled iTunes, reset the Apple TV and turned my MacBook off and on several times.

    Mac OS X 10.5.2
    Apple TV 2.0

    Very annoying

you can't just install an earlier version of itunes! you will get the message saying that the library was created by using a later version of itunes and it won't let you open up anything even if you delete all itunes files (other than your original music files). there is something probably coded in the itunes library file that prevents using earlier versions.

good luck everyone. i tried everything i know and nothing works.

Ok, I fixed mine this morning, and it proved to be a very easy fix. I moved the itunes .xml to my desktop and renamed it 1iTunes Music Library.XML. I then opened the new version of itunes and imported the .xml from the desktop. Poof all my music is there. I do have to re-make my play lists which is a bit of a pain, but the music is all back in itunes where it belongs.
