Mac OS X 10.5.2 Special Report: Freezes when using DVD Player

MacFixIt reader Claus reports repeated freezes when attempting to use DVD Player under Mac OS X 10.5.2. He writes:

"I just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.2 and I am experiencing system lockup when starting up the 'DVD Player.' The system is unresponsive. I am not able to do anything but hard reset the computer by holding down the power button for 8 seconds."

Note that this issue may be cause by Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 rather than Mac OS X 10.5.2.

There appears to be a widespread issue where users of 12" G4 Powerbooks with the NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 experience immediate graphics freezes requiring hard restarts right after launching the DVD Player. MacFixIt reader Lori Crum writes:

"The only solution (for me) is to revert back to 10.5.1, then reinstall 10.5.2 without the Leopard Graphics Update."

See our tutorial on reinstalling the system, then update to Mac OS X 10.5.2 (but ignore the graphics update) in order to do the same.

No question. Leopard Graphics Update is definitely the problem. No solution but to erase or archive, and re-install Leopard, then upgrade with the combo upgrade, but TURN OFF the automatic download option in System Preferences, or it will download the Graphics Update again.
