Fifth-generation iPod update 1.3 released, problems applying

by CNET staff

[Friday, March 14th]

Apple has released a small update, version 1.3, for fifth-generation iPods through iTunes, with scant release notes indicating only that non-specific bugs have been resolved.

A few readers are reporting problems applying the update, receiving error messages indicating that the target iPod "could not be found." Users in this predicament can refer to Knowledge Base article #304508, which offers a number of potential solutions for inability to restore or update iPods in iTunes 7 or later.

Unfortunately, some users have reported a problem in which the iPod is only partially updated, becoming unresponsive. In this case, make sure that your iPod is fully charged and try resetting it on a flat surface as described in this document.

    I'm confused...

I have an 80GB iPod Classic and a new iPod nano. BOTH devices indicate that the current version of the software (v1.1.1) is the most current version. (NOT v1.3 as you indicate)

Are my iPods 'NOT' the fifth-generation version??

    That's right, you don't have a 5th Generation iPod.

You have the "6th" generation called "classic", 5th generation iPods were the first ones with video playback capabilities. And then there's the 5.5th generation.....

Ever since I updated my iPod to version 1.3, my iTunes playback is messed up. If I double click on an album, nothing happens. If I highlight an album and click the play button, nothing happens. If I double click on an individual song, then that song plays. I've reinstalled iTunes 7.6.1, removed preferences and still no change. I was playing music off of iTunes just before the iPod update and all was fine. Any ideas?

Spent about 2 hours with Apple Tech support and got the problem fixed. They seemed to think that my problem was a coincidence and not related to the iPod update.

Well, I'm happy. The wretched 'unknown error -48' messages have stopped and I now get uninterrupted syncing.

If you continually get the update error, try the following:
    1. Synch your iPod.
    2. When synch is complete, and the iPod has returned to the normal screen (Do Not disconnect message gone), click on "Update" on the Summary page
    3. A pop-up is displayed "Updating...." with a progress bar. Disconnect your iPod from the USB port, and then re-connect. The "Do not Disconnect" message will appear, and your iPod will now update. (well, mine did).
