Security Update 2008-002: Aperture cannot print

[Monday, March 24th]

Aperture cannot print Security Update 2008-002 has created a variety of printing problems -- likely a side effect of the heavy modifications made to the CUPS printing architecture in this release, as previously noted (with potential fixes). Now updaters are reporting that Aperture 2.0.1 cannot print, though other applications can. Our previously published fixes for system-wide inability to print (re-appplying the Mac OS X 10.5.2 combo updater and disabling then re-enabling CUPS) have proven ineffective for the Aperture-specific issue.

One reader writes:

"When you try to print an image if you click on print settings in the print dialog box the settings for the printer do not appear and if you try to print nothing happens, the only way you can print is make changes in the print dialog box but don't click on print settings, you will be able to print but you have no control over printer settings so you get what ever the default settings are for that printer."

In some cases, using alternate or updated printer drivers can resolve this issue. Try downloading the latest release of the invaluable Gutenprint set of drivers. If your printer is on the supported list, Gutenprint may restore Aperture printing functionality.

I had serious problems after updating. My menu bar was completely gone. Dock was present but anytime I clicked on program,
I got the spinning pinwheel which would last for several minutes. Effectively I could not use the computer at all. I also had no desktop
icons. Tried safe restarts numerous times without success. Fortunately, did a backup with SuperDuper to firewire and had no trouble
restoring. What is up with this ridiculous update. Will wait a while for further feedback.

I'm using Aperture 2.01 and have installed 2008-002 and have no problem printing from Aperture to an Epson 2200 and 4000. Prints faster then Photoshop in fact. Mac Pro 10.5.2

I am using OS10.5.2, and have the latest security update, and the Print Settings button in the Aperture print window does not work. BUT, I do not need the Print Settings button, because I have presets for all the types of paper and sizes that I use (established long ago, when I did have the use of the Print Settings button). And I have not had any difficulty printing in Aperture. The presets seem to work fine.

In particular, after I read about the problem in MacFixIt, I tried clicking on Print Settings and discovered that the button does not work, but still, when I clicked Print, Aperture did the printing.

I too encountered printing problems. They were related to products from Rogue Amoeba I was using for which they have a patch. These users should check if they have:
    Airfoil
    Audio Hijack Pro
    Radioshift
    Nicecast
Any/All of these were updated and include the new InstantHijack installer that fixes the issue. Yeah, you would not think that this would cause Aperture printing problems, but it has caused untold problems to tons of folks. Worth checking at least...

Re-applying the OS 10.5.2 Combo updater will be a problem for people who find they can't do it after they install one or more of Apple's current updates (with the very subject of this Macfixit article, Security Update 2008-002, being one of the updates some people have found prevents the Combo 10.5.2 updater from being reinstalled):

Installed Gutenprint for my Epson R1800. Made no difference. The Print Settings button still did not do anything.
