QuickTime 7.5 (#3): No playback in Safari, other browsers; continued choppiness

by CNET staff

Question mark for QuickTime content in Safari, other browsers Several readers have reported a problem where they are unable to view embedded QuickTime content in Safari and other browsers after updating to QuickTime 7.5, receiving a QuickTime logo with a question mark instead of the expected content (see image at right).

As described by one MacFixIt reader:

"I now have serious problems after updating my MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5.3 to Quicktime 7.5. Since the update the playback of QuickTime movies in Safari does not work anymore and I get the QuickTime logo with the white Questionmark instead of the playing the movie."

If you are experiencing this issue, quit Safari (or your current browser) and look in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins directory (this is the Library folder at the root level of your hard drive, not the one inside your home user directory). Try removing the following files from that directory:

  • VLC Plugin.plugin
  • QuickTime plugin.plugin
  • Quicktime plugin.webplugin

Restart your browser and check for persistence of the issue.

If the problem is not resolved, a different plug-in may be causing the issue. Keep removing files from this directory (start with any third-party plug-ins present) until the issue disappears.

Sloppy playback continues Users continue to report an issue in which playback quality of audio and video is severely degraded after the update to QuickTime 7.5, often stuttering or appearing in a slow, choppy fashion.

One MacFixIt reader provides this odd report:

"After installing the standalone QuickTime 7.5 on my G4 MDD running 10.4.11 yesterday, I had the same choppy playback/sound problems others have described here. Before resorting to killing the beast by using a Retrospect backup, I also installed the new updated Opera 9.5 and somehow that has solved my QuickTime 'stuttering' problem."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

System will not startup after installation Some users have reported an inability to properly startup after applying the QuickTime 7.5 update. One reader writes:

"After update of both Quick Time and Airport Utility, 3 Ghz Intel IMac stuck during restart.  Upon powering off and attempting restart, would not go beyond grey startup screen (not even to spinning ball).  Tried safe start, no difference.  I cannot even eject current disk in drive to attempt using install disk."

If you are experiencing similar issues, please see our tutorial on resolving post-update startup problems.

Adobe Photoshop crashes MacFixIt reader Rodolphe Paccard reports Photoshop crashes after the update:

"Since I updated to QuickTime 7.5, Adobe Photoshop 8.0 (8.0x119) crashes on launch. Trashing the pref., repairing permissions, restarting didn't help."

I'm now having trouble with Flash in Safari after updating QT on my MBP. Anyone else having problems with flash content? It works fine in Firefox, btw.

In the past and still current the quicktime icon with the question mark normally denotes a missing codec of some description.

I have perian 1.1 installed and don't see any of the issues posted here at all.

When is MacFixIt going to get rid of this spammer? Doesn't anyone monitor these comments anymore?
