iTunes 7.7: shuts down when attempting to access the iTunes store
Some iTunes users have noticed that upon accessing the iTunes store the program will shut down and give an "iTunes unexpectedly quit" error message along with a crash report.
Apple Discussions poster Kerry Vance wrote:
"When I try to go to the itunes store my itunes automatically quits. This was happening the past couple days with itunes itself but last night when I opened it up it stays open now but not when I try to go to the store."
Some users have unsuccessfully attempted to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X to overcome this problem, which indicates the problem is with some user account settings and not with any system files. Additionally, it appears to affect users of iTunes 7.6 as well as 7.7, and has occurred on several versions of Mac OS X.
This problem is apparently caused by issues with proxy settings. Home routers or ISPs often automatically assign custom network settings which such as DNS servers, search domains, and proxy servers, and removing these custom settings seems to help affected users.
Remove custom proxy settings in the system Go to the "System Preferences" and open the "Network" preferences pane. Next, select the active device (Airport or Ethernet, or other connection) in the list to the left and click the "Advanced" button. In the resulting window select "Proxies" and in the drop-down menu select "Manually". In the resulting list of proxy options, ensure that all the checkboxes are unchecked. Then save the settings and attempt to connect to the store via iTunes.
