iTunes 7.7.1 (#3): Buggy update process leads to broken updating for iPod/iPhone applications
There appears to be a problem in iTunes 7.7 and 7.7.1 in which mobile applications for iPod and iPhone are not updating correctly. When iTunes downloads an update to an application it does not overwrite the previous version the user had installed. Instead, it creates a new file and calls it "app_name 1.ipa", which causes problems since it appears iTunes uses the file name to help identify the application and check for updates. This results in a broken updating process where only the first available update is installed, and subsequent updates are not recognized.
This problem is caused by a bug in the iTunes software, and a true fix will have to come with an update from Apple, but until then users can ensure applications get updated by manually renaming and reinstalling them.
Manually rename and reinstall iPod and iPhone applications Go to the "~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/" folder and locate the application that will not update. More than likely it will have a number in the name, such as "Cro-Mag 1.ipa" instead of "Cro-Mag.ipa". Select the file and press enter to edit the name and remove the number and the space before it.
When the rename is complete, reinstall the program by dragging it to the Desktop and then dragging it back to the iTunes window. It should install and update properly.
