Streaming problems with iTunes 8.0.1 update

Upon installing the iTunes 8.0.1 update, some users are experiencing problems streaming both audio and video from various sources.

Apple Discussions poster VistaClara writes:

"I installed iTunes 8.01 and now I can't stream any movies to my Apple TV. It worked fine before, but now, after I select a movie, the gear just keeps spinning and nothing streams. Frustrating!!!"

Likewise, others have reported issues with the ability to connect to the iTunes store and connecting to streams in the iTunes "radio" section. When Apple initially released iTunes 8 along with the QuickTime 7.5.5 update, some users were also experiencing problems with streaming media, as was outlined in these MacFixIt articles regarding the lack of ability to stream as well as freezing in iChat. Since most of these reports have had to do with the QuickTime update more than iTunes, it's possible bugs in the latest version of QuickTime are affecting iTunes 8.0.1.

Things to Try

Reset QuickTime and iTunes preferences It is recommended that users first try resetting preference files for QuickTime and iTunes. To do this, go to the /username/Library/Preferences/ folder and remove the com.apple.iTunes.plist file. Then go to the /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/ folder and remove the com.apple.QuickTime.plist file as well. Then restart the computer and open the system preferences and set the quicktime streaming rate to the highest level.

Reinstall the QuickTime update Download the standalone updater for the latest QuickTime update (available here) and then reboot the machine into Safe Mode by holding shift at bootup. When in Safe Mode, run a permissions fix on the hard drive using Disk Utility and then apply the update, restarting upon completion. Users might try this in conjunction with removing the QuickTime and iTunes preferences files.
