Late-2008 MacBooks: More on freeze-on-wake, wireless problems, trackpad issues

Users continue to report a bevy of issues with the new Late-2008 (unibody) MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Most pervasive is an issue we've reported upon extensively in the past few days in which the system refuses to properly wake from sleep, displaying only a blank screen while the keyboard illuminates or freezing upon wake.

As previously reported, the best fixes for this issue are:

  • Do not connect or disconnect any external devices while the new MacBooks are asleep; disconnect any external devices before putting the machines to sleep.
  • Turn off the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" in the Bluetooth pane of System Preferences fixes this issue.

The latest reader reports:

  • "I've got this too. Sometimes it simply wont wake up. Or rather it appears to partially wake up, hte keyboard light will come on, the disk will spin up, but the screen simply wont wake up. Bluetooth aggravated the situation for me as the machine would wake from sleep more often, for example as I carried it sleeping through the kitchen where the blue tooth mouse was sitting on the table, it would wake up then go back to sleep or hang as I left the room."
  • "I am getting the same results: MacBook Pro can't find bluetooth mouse on wake up, sometimes, freezes."
  • "I've also been having the same problems as some other poster - plugging in or unplugging any external devices while the computer is asleep causes it to wake from sleep (power light is on) but the display to remain off. I presume it is a freeze because opening and shutting the laptop does not go back to sleep."

We speculate that Apple will introduce a firmware update soon to combat these issues.

Wireless issues Users also continue to report significant wireless issue with the new systems. Two recent reader reports:

"Set up my first Late 2008 MacBook Pro this week, and find the network speed varies significantly during the day. (It's primarily connecting to an Airport Extreme 802.11n.)"

"I've also been having 'connection timeout' problems with AirPort, even when 1 meter away from the base station and putting in all the correct information."

If you are experiencing similar issues, peruse our tutorial on wireless troubleshooting. If any of thee fixes work, please drop us a line at http://www.macfixit.com/contact.

Trackpad problems Meanwhile, users continue to report trackpad issues. One reader recently wrote:

"Frequently, the trackpad will become non-responsive for anywhere from several seconds to a a minute or more. I have had to reboot the machine multiple times to get it working again."

While there may be some genuine hardware issues with the new MacBooks' trackpads, other problems are caused by improper use. See our previous coverage, which includes usage tips.

More observation of this macbook pro 2008. It will not burn a disk image of Osx leopard. It will not start up from burned osx disk or burned diskwarrior cd.
Major problems pwning iphone 3g. ( specifically wont recognize pwned iphone for restore).
Problems using external diplay through adapter (dvi to mini port).
Also battery issues. (saying 96% instead of 100 percent) Lastly usb problems with external drives. ( i have had to repair external drives with diskwarrior app. after multiple anomalies - ("disk is damaged and can only be used with limited functionality").
The trackpad is the least of my concerns.

I can't comment on the other issues, but the current version of Diskwarrior (V4.1.1 Rev 810) will not boot the Late 2008 MBs or MBPs. It may be a while before they get an update out. Check the support section of their website.

I bought a MBP Nov 7th. I have experienced both the 96% battery charge issue, and the external usb drive problem. Sounds like a pattern to me. I have also encountered a permissions issue when transferring files from a DVD to the desktop.

By far the most annoying is the very slow page loads/timeouts I experience browsing (mentioned on this site). And the impossible to eject unreadable cd (a cd/dvd that is scratched enough to be unreadable -google credit card trick to remove).

Honestly, I bought this MBP because I thought I would have a more reliable notebook, instead I am chasing some very irritating problems.

I have been unable to migrate from a 2nd edition of the black Mac Book to the late 08 Mac Book, either via the wireless network in my home or a direct ethernet connection. I noted the Migration Assistant version was not the latest on the new Book and did a software update. Apple Care was not much help:(

Instead of using my existing wireless network, I did a "computer-to-computer" network to link the source and destination computers for migration. Everything was done in less than 3 hours.

Been having this same problem from day one with my new MacBook Pro. Found permissions issues, repaired from both within the system and with the installation dvd. No change. Archived and re installed the OS and still no improvement/. I have been on the phone with Apple and haven't had any resolution for about a week now. Wouldn't seem to make sense to replace the laptop if they all have the problem.

Next on my list is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall from scratch.

Hi, I have the same problem on my brand new Macbook - it just won't wake up when the lid/screen is opened. Tried Smartsleep - no effect, tried turning off Blue Tooth wake up - no effect, re-installed Mac OSX and updated all - no effect. There are no peripherals connected. Have somebody solved this, or should Apple replace the computer?

I was also having trouble with my late 2008 Macbook freezing when trying to wake it... however, another thread on this same topic pointed me to a pref pane called SmartSleep. I've got it set on "sleep only" and so far it's worked. Here's hoping it keeps on working.
