Apple has released Apple TV software update 2.3, which includes the following significant enhancements:

  • AirTunes Streaming from Apple TV: Music can be streamed via AirTunes to Airport Express speakers or other Apple TVs in your house.
  • Third-party Remote Controls: Apple TV can now learn other remote controls and use them in addition to the Apple Remote.
  • Playlists: Playlists in iTunes that contain Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and Music Videos can now be seen on Apple TV.
  • Music Volume Control: Support for volume control in Music.

To update your Apple TV to the current software version, select Settings > General using your Apple Remote, then Update Software. You can then download the update and choose Update Now.

Be sure to sync/backup your Apple TV before applying update. It appears to erase the entire disk upon installing the new update. Thankfully mine was synced and it is now transferring everything back to the Apple TV (slow process).

The new software disabled my Crestron universal remote and won't re-learn it--or I'm too technically-challenged to figure it out...

I'd wait to see if others have the same problem if you're currently using a universal remote.

This is all very strange, I've been using my Harmony remote w/the AppleTV from the first day ( it's been over 4 months) without any issues, go figure. Applying the latest update did not erase the hard drive, but then I'm constantly changing the synced content in iTunes on the drive to keep it lean and clean.

Installed without erasing my content. I taught it to work with my TV remote control, it's a very cleverly easy interface.

Navigation is still very slow to respond. Love the volume control and AirTunes streaming. Shame they only apply to music and not videos!
