Apple has released Safari 3.2.1, which the company says includes "stability improvements and is recommended for all Safari users."

The new release is available in both Tiger and Leopard editions.

Safari 3.2.1 requires Security Update 2008-007 and Mac OS X 10.5.5.

Safari 3.2.1 is much more stable than 3.2 on my 1.6 GHz MacBook Pro, though I have had a few crashes while web pages are loading after a link has been clicked or when a form is being sent. This is with Pith Helmet and Inquisitor installed and running.

Pith Helmet has not yet been updated for Safari 3.2 or 3.2.1. For this reason it can cause Safari to crash, as it does not disable itself as politely as Saft does. To disable Pith Helmet you can remove the SIMBL folder from the /Library/InputManagers folder - and Saft, too, if you want to avoid the Saft loading problem error message every time you launch Safari. If you remove the SIMBL folder you will not need to move the PithHelment.bundle file from the /Library/Application Supports/SIMBL/Plugins folder. Removing only the PithHelment.bundle file may not be enough. SIMBL can cause problems all by itself. I have created an InputManagers (disabled) folder in the /Library folder because I find I have to disable one input manager or another every time Safari is updated. While the disabled files will eventually be trashed when updates are available, keeping them around till the updates arrive helps me keep track of the hacks I am and am not using.

Does anyone know why Version Tracker shows Safari 3.2.1 as an 11k update? My download was/is 39.9 MB for Leopard.

"Does anyone know why Version Tracker shows Safari 3.2.1 as an 11k update?"

Yes. The new setup at VT uses this sort of size listing whenever the link they use does not go directly to the file, but instead goes to a web page from which you can then download the file yourself. In this case the link goes to a page where you choose which version you want: Safari for Leopard or Safari for Tiger. The 11k is apparently the size of the linking file page they are using to send you to the download choice page. VT is not going to list the program size when there are different versions to choose from, each of which will have its own unique size. I personally wish they would leave the size listing out all together in these cases as it is disconcerting. Write to them if you agree.

MFI made a typo/semantic error. The following is incorrect:

"Safari 3.2.1 requires Security Update 2008-007 and Mac OS X 10.5.5."

As MFI noted above this sentence, in their description of Safari v3.2.1, there is an edition for Leopard AND an edition for Tiger. Probably the best way to restate the erroneous sentence is:

-- Safari 3.2.1 requires Security Update 2008-007 and either Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard 10.5.5. --
