Several users have reported problems after installation of QuickTime 7.6. We previously reported on audio corruption and the Finder quitting repeatedly--an issue that was traced to problems with the Stuffit archive managing software.

For users experiencing problems with the QuickTime 7.6 update, the following troubleshooting steps may help fix the problem.

Troubleshooting Steps

Remove QuickTime-related preferences It may be possible that corrupt QuickTime preference files are causing playback problems with QuickTime player. Users can try removing the file com.apple.QuickTime.plist from the /Library/Preferences/ directory.

Additionally, users should try removing the files:

  • com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
  • com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist
from /username/Library/Preferences/

Users should also try removing the preference files for other programs in which QuickTime is used and in which the problems are experienced, such as Safari.

Clear Caches Along with preferences, users can try removing the cache files for programs that are showing quicktime playback problems. The caches may appear either as files or folders within the /username/Library/Caches/ folder, and can be deleted. If users do not know which cache to delete, removing all of them will not hurt anything and they will be replaced as applications cache files.

Remove third-Party plug-ins If users have installed third-party plugins, components, or other add-ons for quicktime, it is recommended to remove these items. If the problems stop, then it is recommended to either try reinstalling the plug-in, or waiting to reinstall until an update from the developer is available. QuickTime add-ons are placed in the /Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/ folder.

Reinstall the QuickTime update Several users have found that reinstalling the QuickTime update has cleared the problems introduced with the initial update. Users can download the update from Apple's QuickTime webpage, and it is recommended as an additional precaution that users install the update when booted into "Safe Mode" and after running a permissions fix on the boot drive with "Disk Utility".
