iPhoto 8.0.1: major improvements reported

by CNET staff

Users, however, are reporting some other major enhancements.

Speed Several users reported significant delays under iPhoto 8.0, particularly when switching modes. The new release delivers a noticeable boost of speed in various areas.

Faces iPhoto 8.0.1 may resolve a number of issues related to Faces, particularly one in which Faces categories inexplicably merge; in other words, two persons' faces combine into one face category. It also seems to have left its calling card,
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .

Totally resistant to Disk utility, Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro 5.
I seem to be getting a collection of these resistant Permission Differs,

The 'l' indicates it's a symbolic link. It doesn't have to do with permissions.

Why does iPhoto '08 show as version 7.x, while iPhoto '09 shows as version 8.x?

Because the sales names are not indicative of the version. It's like Adobe's "Creative Suite" applications: Photoshop "CS4" is actually version 11, and Illustrator CS4 is version 14, even though they're both branded as "CS4" and distributed in the same suite.

Apple's iLife applications are developed at different rates, even though they're shipped together.

Just upgraded from iPhoto 8.0 to 8.0.1. I had hoped to see speed improvement when switching from Events or Photo mode to Places mode. Unfortunately I see no difference- still takes 8 to 10 seconds to switch from Events or Photos to Places.

Occasionally on this site there are arguments between those who do and don't believe in permissions repair before and or after software updates. Well, i did the update (standard process; it downloads, shuts down all running processes, installs, reboots) that did the airport utility, ilife, raw support, etc. Permissions repair gave this (for Leopard):

    Repairing permissions for ?xxxxx [deleted]?
    Reading permissions database.
Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.

Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
    Permissions differ on "Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/lanArrow.png", should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r-- .
    Permissions differ on "Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/lanCheck.png", should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r-- .
    Permissions differ on "Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/lanDisabled.png", should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r-- .
    Permissions differ on "Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/wanArrow.png", should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r-- .
    Permissions differ on "Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/wanCheck.png", should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r-- .
    Permissions differ on "Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app/Contents/Resources/wanDisabled.png", should be -rwxrwxr-x , they are -rw-rw-r-- .
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iLifeMediaBrowser.framework/Versions/A/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x .

    Permissions repair complete

NOW do you believe Apple's installer's don't always get it right?
