Weekly Utilities Update: Hardware Monitor, IPSentinelStatus, Leopard Cache Cleaner, more

by CNET staff

Staff Pick: Hardware Monitor

Hardware monitor is a powerful utility that taps into the various built-in sensors in your Mac, giving you real-time status updates and statistics on system performance measurements. Included in the measurements taken are fan speeds, voltage measurements, power usage, and ambient lighting.

In addition to Hardware Monitor, the developer also provides "Temperature Monitor", which keeps track system component temperature, including that for the CPUs, chipsets, hard drives, RAM. These abilities are a must for people troubleshooting crashes and odd computer behavior, as well as for determining if the computer is in danger of stressing any components.

The latest version (4.7) provides the following fixes and features.

  • Full support for all new and upcoming Mac models.
  • Consistent labeling in the program.
  • Slightly revised numbering for system components.
