Apple Releases Security Updates for OS X 10.4; Safari Updates

by CNET staff

Apple has released a security update for users of OS X 10.4 (Tiger). This update is suggested for all Mac users running 10.4 Tiger. In addition, Apple has released an update for all versions of Safari 3 (Tiger, Leopard, and Windows).

Information on the security update should be available at the following apple webpage soon:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

The Safari update includes the latest security updates for Safari and is recommended for all Safari 3 users. If you have the Safari 4 beta installed you will not see the update for Safari 3 available in Software Update. A separate update for Safari 4 has been released, and can be obtained by going to the Safari 4 beta download site.

All updates should be available via Software Update, but in addition are available for direct download from Apple's website:

Safari Updates:

Tiger Security Updates:

As we recommend with all updates, please be sure to back up your system before installing, and if you are having any problems please be sure to let us know: http://www.macfixit.com/contact

Me, too. Looks like a software problem, not a network problem. Try a direct download from Apple....going there next.

Did the direct download from Apple, not via Software Update, and it worked.

Installed OK on iBook G4 10.4.11. Software Update did not see the Safari 3.2.3 updater until after the Security Update was installed, so I guess it needs it first.

Now also updated successfully on G5 PPC 10.4.11.
I think the problems with downloading from Software Update last night were due simply to server overload.

The update broke parsing of .stm pages. BBC.co.uk pages do not display. Don't know specifically of other sites. Could someone check and report?

Fine here. What machine/OS version/browser are you using?

    imac 20" (mid-2007)
Safari Version 4 Public Beta (5528.17)
Was working fine with beta under 10.5.6
I applied the Safari beta update right after the 10.5.7 patch , so not sure which broke it. Will try to roll back Safari to the previous beta version and report.

Can you go back to Safari 3.2.3? That works for me.

Curiouser and curiouser. Working fine now. No idea why. Could credit a reboot, but that hadn't helped earlier. Anyway, thanks for the support, ianrid.

The Safari 4 beta update doesn't seem to register that it's been done. I updated my 10.4.11 iMac with both new updates, but on checking Safari still reports that it needs the 4 beta update., even after a second update.

I've got the same problem of not registering the update on a Macbook under 10.4.11. And installing the update again seems to produce no change.

Same thing here with 10.4.11 on a G4 Powerbook.
I first did the Standalone Update, then the Software Update.
After each one, Software Update said I still needed it.

    Same here.

    iMac G5 PPC l.8 2gb ram 10.4.11.

Forced to use OS X Disk Utility on DVD when I encountered a permanent sleep state upon hard start of Mac.

Tried: uninstall and reinstall Beta update and resetting smu, pram, and nvram. Trashed update plist.

Still not registering in Software Update.

I believe that after you've done the security update you need to do a separate update for the Safari beta by downloading it from the Apple site here: http://www.apple.com/safari/
After the install it will still show as B4 but the version number will be different. Version 4 Public Beta (5528.17)

Installed Security Update for OSX 10.4 on my G5 PPC. No problems. Also installed Safari Update, version info still says "4 Public Beta", but I have noticed a significant Safari speed increase.

Did my usual pre- and post-update routine: full Onyx maintenance, disk utility preferences and disk permissions, Tech Tool deluxe run, and Diskwarrior -- install went fine and all appears well...

Hey, can someone please tell me why I keep getting Safari version 4 updates with the same KB every time.
I have downloaded FIVE updates to version 4 and each time, it's still called version 4.
    What's going on?
I can't find out any info on why I am getting so many updates on my Tiger book and not on my Leopard mac mini.
