MacFixIt readers report: Mac OS X 10.5.7 update issues

MacFixIt users are reporting a wide variety of issues surrounding Apple's recent update to the Leopard operating system--10.5.7. Although many of these issues may not be widespread, they are possible issues that have surfaced since our users updated their systems. As fixes become available for any of these issues, MacFixIt will be sure to report. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to comment below this article or send us an e-mail.

We cannot stress enough how important it is to back up your system before doing any software update, but especially when installing a major operating system update.

Entourage not talking to Exchange
MacFixIt user "Charlie" writes:

"The 10.5.7 update breaks synchronization between Entourage and Exchange 2007. I have confirmed this on a number of machines. I first though it was the 12.1 and 12.1.7 Office updates I put on during the same round of updates. But I freshly installed Office after removing all turds and the problem still happens with 12.0.0 on Mac OS 10.5.7. I guess Microsoft didn't do much testing of Apple's updates during the seeding period...d'oh!"

Adobe Acrobat update not working
Adobe has updated its Acrobat Reader software to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.7. However, as MacFixIt reader "Ron R." relates:

"I can't seem to get Acrobat to run since installing Mac OS X 10.5.7. I've installed the patch put out today (Acro 9.1.1) and that didn't seem to help. I reinstalled the application from disk. No help. This is running on a iMac."

Possible fix
"Ron R." later writes in to tell us how he solved this issue.

1. Uninstall your previous version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
2. Download the updated version of the software from Adobe and install it, version 9.1.1.

Corel Painter 11 not working properly
MacFixIt reader "Christopher A." writes:

"I have updated to 10.5.7 and now Corel Painter 11 is completely broken. I reinstalled and deleted prefs. Still broken. I was using it before the update same day."

MacBook Pro not sleeping when closed
MacFixIt reader "Nate G." reports:

"This was the first disastrous update for me. When I closed my MacBook Pro it did not go to sleep, the backlight was still on, and the machine was frozen with no cursor. I had to hold the power button to turn it off. I tried zapping PRAM and deleting caches to no effect. In the end I had to go back to a 10.5.6 Super Duper clone of my disk. My wife, also with a MacBook Pro, is not having this problem.  One other person on Macintosh reported a similar problem."

iMac kernel panic after update
MacFixIt user "K.J." writes:

"I downloaded the 10.5.7 update through the software update application and let it install on my late 2008 24-inch iMac. The system asked to be rebooted and I confirmed. It then started the installation on shutdown as per usual. Upon completion of installation a message popped up stating the download was corrupt or damaged. The Mac immediately rebooted and came back up to the white screen with the Apple logo. It then went to the gray screen with a kernel panic and a power button icon in the middle of the screen with a message asking me to reboot the system. I did and every time it reboots into the kernel panic screen. Darn! Sour apples again."

Little Snitch 2.1.1 causing hangs after log-in
MacFixIt user "Scott B." reports:

"I dropped you a line last night about getting hungup AFTER login (the "space" screen) in 10.5.7.  Apparently this is being caused by the latest version of Little Snitch (2.1.1 and nightly builds since) that was released the day before 10.5.7. I didn't pick up on it because there was no restart until 10.5.7 was installed.  See one of multiple threads here: http://forums.obdev.at/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2739"

Possible fix
Try installing the latest nightly build from Little Snitch. If that does not work, see if you experience the issues after uninstalling Little Snitch.

Finder apparently frozen after update
MacFixIt reader "Matt E." writes:

"So I went through the whole update process and now when my computer boots I can't open anything, move anything. Basically I can do nothing. Sometimes I can open the hard drive, but I can't open anything beyond that. I can't move any files, even to just a new position on the desktop. Basically, it's useless."

Again, these are issues that our readers are experiencing and writing in about. These issues could very well be local to their individual machines, but other people may be experiencing the same or similar issues. If you had one of these issues and fixed it, or would like to confirm that the issue is wider spread than a single user, please feel free to comment on this article or send us an e-mail.

I've noticed via Growl that my networking stack is now periodically going down, then immediately back up. This wasn't happening with 10.5.6, and it's unlikely my router is rebooting this frequently without my noticing it.

It doesn't seem to be actual problem (yet, as I haven't been doing anything like a file transfer when this has happened), but it is a new behaviour.

Not only was I unable to quit iCal except by "force quitting", all my calendars were gone. I had to use Time machine to restore them.

I wonder if you had iCal as a start up item as I do?

    MacPro Dual Quad Intel
Followed the sage advise I've told everyone for years and probably learned right here at MacFixit.

    Unplug peripherals 1st
    Onyx/Cocktail 2nd,
    Safe-Boot 3rd,
    Combo Installer 4th.

very long re-boot 1st time after install(15min+).. Acrobat Pro 9 works though I did just see update and am getting.. Entourage 2008 with hosted Exchange still ticking fine.. Actually seeing a little more pep overall machine then before update,, will be loading on older Quad and Dual core Intel and G5 later for testing..

    "Hi,

I've found a solution or a work around that helps in my case.
Problem: deactivated ethernet port in my active network environment while using airport alone!
Mith my MBP I usually connect to the internet by WLAN and I use an environment setting with ethernet deactivated (maybe you too?).
I've activated the ethernet port, saved the environment - apply - voila.

    Sleep mode works as usual.

    Greetings from Germany,
    Kai

MacBook Pro sleep issue, would sleep one time when lid is closed but on the second time it will lock up. I too only had Airport activated.

Once I added the Ethernet adapter, the sleep issue was resolved. Just out of curiosity I removed the Ethernet adapter, and wouldn't you know the sleep problem reappeared. So obviously I reactivated the Ethernet adapter and the sleep issue is fixed.

Thanks for the fix, you saved me a lot of troubleshooting time!

Thunderbird has severe problems with Hebrew text, changing character encoding (any way!) seems to solve the problem, but once you close the window the problem returns.

Thanks for this pointer. Had similar symptoms on my dual G5 2.5 so gave this a try and had success with 10.5.7 and the 10.4.11 security update. Got rid of apple.com .pref files buried in (HD)/Library/Preferences and (HD)/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, some in my user's Library/Preferences, cleared caches (again) just in case. (Symptoms were: crashing or locking up after awaking from sleep (both), hanging at blue screen when cold booted (10.5.7), sometimes crashing when just moving and/or double-clicking mouse (10.4.11), when using Firefox and/or Safari; i.e., generally flakey and uncooperative.) Did a few other things that didn't have any effect prior to this. Hope this was the whole problem and takes care of it.

Anyone experiencing trouble with mounting CD's, DVD's, hard drive's or thumbdrives? If I restart my MacBook Pro it will mount but that's the only way I can see mountable devices.

Help! I can no longer put alarms on iCal events!

The default is set to 30 minutes before the event, but it's ignoring the default for new events.

When I try to set an alarm via the menu, it changes briefly to whatever I've chosen, then quickly reverts to "none".

I can't tolerate this! Proper operation of iCal is vital to my health and well-being!

After the update my Epson R280 Printer will not print. When checking on my printer's utility it states: Operation Could not be completed CUPS Server Not Available.

I've never had this before. I downloaded and installed the latest driver, Zapped the RAM, turned off the printer and turned it on again, rebooted a number of times, all to no avail.

I did back up everything using SuperDuper before installing 10.5.7.

I went to the Epson Printer Utility, did a head cleaning (it worked), then tried to print a test pattern for the printer: IT WORKED! so I know there's not a cable problem.

My next step will probably be to try a completely new Combo update. Any suggestions before then would be appreciated.

I tried printing documents in Microsoft Office Word X for Mac Service Release 1 and Pages 08, version 3.03.

Did you repair permissions from the Disk Utility program? This often effects the CUPS files.

Yes, I've repaired the permissions, uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. When I boot up with by 10.5.6 version which I made a copy of before installation, the printer functions perfectly.

I also downloaded the 729 MB 10.5.7 Combo file and installed it and it acts the same.

Thanks for your suggestion. I haven't tried to repair the permissions on this latest installation so I will do that and if it works I will report back positively.

Repairing the permissions did not work. Neither has deleting all of preferences which deal with printing. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Check which driver is selected for this printer.

There might be two drivers looking something like this:

    Epson R280 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.1.3
    Epson R280 - Gutenprint v5.1.3

You want the second one. The first one is left over from some previous incarnation of the Print & Fax system.

In order of how you should try them
    1) Gutenprint is at 5.2.3 now. sourceforge.gutenprint.org. You can download the Mac version from there and reinstall. Gutenprint does support the R280
    2) Use the Printer Setup Utility and "Reset Print System". NB This removes all printers from the list along with all your customized presets. It doesn't remove the drivers, but you have to repopulate your printer list. If you have a lot of presets you don't want to manually re-enter, you might not want to do this:
    3) use the CUPS controller built into the system. (google localhost:631).
http://localhost:631/admin will bring up a browser based management system that allows much more fine tuned control than Printer Setup Utility. Specifically, you may need to change the "device" to something other than what it currently is in the popup menu. You will need to authenticate with administrator password. I needed to do this to get my DYMO CD Printer to work, right out of the box.
    4) Try gutting everything epson out of /Library and /Users/yourname/Library, and reinstalling from your Leopard disk (optional installs.) Maybe the older driver will work. (You may have to authenticate to do some of these deletions).
    Good luck

Thanks for the advice on the print driver. I downloaded the Epson driver v.368 and it worked! I had looked at the Gutenprint driver but I thought I'd try the Epson and it immediately worked. Earlier I think I had downloaded one with a later date but not the correct one.

I really appreciate the help all of you have given in bailing me out.

    Have a good week ahead.

Since updating to 10.5.7 on my PowerMac G5, I have been getting very frequent error messages: "The application DashboardClient quit unexpectedly." Then it asks if I want to ignore or report it to Apple. This now happens several time a day. This doesn't seem to be affecting my use of Dashboard. So far, I've only seen this message after I've used Dashboard (sometimes hours later).
I have not seen this issue prior to updating to 10.5.7. It started immediately after the update.

I have already tried, many times, trashing the 2 dashboard plists in my Library Folder (com.apple.dashboard.client.plist and com.apple.dashboard.plist). I also tried using terminal to disable an then re-enable dashboard [(defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES)followed by logout and login then (defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO) followed by logout and login]. None of this has helped.

I did install the combo updater and had the pulsating blue-screen issue, but after a hard turn-off and rebooting, the system came back as others had experienced. I repaired permission prior to and after the 10.5.7 update.

I am not experiencing this or any of the other issues on other Macs I've updated (by combo updater or via Software Update).

DNS isn't too happy either. Since the upgrade the logs are full of:

    17-May-2009 00:42:38.535 host unreachable resolving 'ns2.ic.ac.uk/A/IN': 2001:630:0:8::14#53
    17-May-2009 00:42:38.535 host unreachable resolving 'dns0.eng.cam.ac.uk/A/IN': 2001:630:0:45::11#53

It looks like the DNS server is appending part of the named.ca file to the address.

Also there are format errors (and yes, IPv6 is disabled).

    17-May-2009 00:41:39.791 FORMERR resolving 'ns2.grandzap.com/AAAA/IN': 110.52.6.252#53

    17-May-2009 00:41:40.021 FORMERR resolving 'ns5.prizeaware.com/AAAA/IN': 60.191.221.116#53
    17-May-2009 00:41:40.021 FORMERR resolving 'ns1.grandzap.com/AAAA/IN': 60.191.221.116#53
    17-May-2009 00:41:40.021 FORMERR resolving 'ns2.grandzap.com/AAAA/IN': 60.191.221.116#53

If someone has a workaround, it would sure be nice to know.

My Unibody MBP 15.4 could not open some website after updating OS X 10.5.7, I think it's related to the DNS problem....
