Since the release of Apple's new iPhone software (version 3.0) and the subsequent release of its new hardware (the iPhone 3G S) many consumers are left wondering which software features are supported on their older iPhones.

The answers are actually quite simple. Apple has released a chart in a KB Article. The chart lays out the major features of the new iPhone 3.0 software and shows which of them are available by iPhone model.

For those of you still hanging on to the original iPhone, the lack of supported features in the iPhone 3.0 software may cause the new iPhone 3G S to look quite enticing. You will not be able to use MMS, Stero Bluetooth, Internet tethering, record video, use voice control, the compass, or Nike .

If you are holding an iPhone 3G (or planning on purchasing the recently reduced price iPhone 3G) you will not be able to take advantage of video recording, the compass, voice control, new accessibility features, or Nike . You will have access to MMS, Stereo Bluetooth and Internet tethering.

All iPhone models enjoy Cut, Copy & Paste, Landscape keyboard, Spotlight search, Parental controls, Shake to Shuffle, Voice memos, and Peer-to-peer connectivity (when available).

Is there much point in getting the 3.0 upgrade if you have an older iPod Touch? It seems to me that most of the features aren't supported by the older hardware.

As with new computer operating systems, I'd assume that future software and updates from developers may require you to upgrade the OS.

As much as it is a drag that Touch users have to pay $10 for the upgrade, there is still a lot of good stuff, for even 1st generation users: cut-copy-paste, quick universal spotlight-type searching, enhanced searching within Mail and iTunes; ability to buy enhancements from within apps, pinpoint "scrubbing" control within music, videos and audiobooks, ability to go instantly back 30 seconds on audiobooks, etc. 2nd generation Touch users have other enhancements that have to do with voice. It's worth the $10- a major upgrade.

Somewhat decent video recording--at variable frame rates, depending on lighting conditions, up to 15 frames per second in good light--can be achieved even on the iPhone 2G, by jailbreaking the phone and then installing Cycorder. Good enough to record some things.
