iPhone 3.0 update initial problems.

by CNET staff

Many people have successfully updated their iPhones to the newly released 3.0 software. However, as with the previous iPhone updates Apple's servers are getting saturated and quite a few people are getting error messages saying to try again later. CNET editor "Erica Ogg" has posted a small report on iPhone activation server unavailability. These problems are among a few others that some people are reporting in about the new software update.

Error -4 and Server errors.

In addition to server lags, folks have been getting an "Error -4" when trying to apply the update. One poster "jsboger" in the comments section in our announcement of the iPhone update mentioned after getting this error his iPhone will not respond to input. This was followed by others who had the same error but who could get the iPhone to respond. Many were able to clear the problem by reconnecting to the iTunes store after shutting off and resetting the iPhone.

There may be other errors that crop up with the iTunes store servers when you try to either download or activate the new iPhone OS, and our best advice at this point is to give it time. Let the traffic die down and give it another shot in a few hours, or a day or two.

What to do if your update fails?

If for some reason your update does not complete and you are unable to run the latest update, hopefully you have performed a complete backup of your iPhone before updating. This should be done automatically before every synchronization, update, or restoration; however, you can do it manually by right-clicking the iPhone in iTunes and choosing "Back Up".

With a functional backup, use this menu again and choose "Restore from Backup...", which will allow you to load the previous OS and settings, and then subsequently try updating again.

If the iPhone is inoperable, try clearing freezes by pressing the "home" button for about 10 seconds. If this doesnt work, try turning it off and back on by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button until the red slider appears. To fully reset the device, press both of these buttons together for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

Lastly, try restoring the iphone which will remove all personal data and clear any settings you may have applied which might be conflicting with the new software update. To do this, connect it to your computer and launch iTunes. Then select the phone and in the "Summary" tab select the "Restore" option. If you have not backed up your phone, be sure to select the option to do that, otherwise this option is not needed. After the restore has completed, you will need to activate the phone with iTunes (the phone should instruct you to do this), and then restore the phone's data and settings from your most recent backup.

Misc. Problems

Some people have written in with incorrect languages being used after updating, and others have had errors stating there is not enough space to synchronize playlists. These reports so far seem to be isolated, but a restore might help. For languages, go to the iPhone's settings (mechanical "gears" button) and click the "general" section (also looks like some "gears"). Then hit the "international" button (fourth one from the top) and the very top button should be the one for languages. Select the desired language and press the top-right corner button to save the changes.

Unplugging all USB devices (except keyboard, mouse, and iPhone) prior to attempting update tends to solve most iPhone firmware/software install problems.

This update didn't go smoothly. When iTunes said the update was complete, I found that most of my apps didn't appear on the phone. (The navigation 'dots' showed that I had many pages of apps, but I couldn't see them.) Had to do a restore, which after chugging along, did put everything back. Interestingly, the Restore kept version 3.0 in place.
But after the restore, I was unable to rearrange any of the apps around (they were locked in position) and there was a 'blank page' in the middle of my app desktop.
Finally I tried a home page reset in the iphone general settings, which seems to have fixed this.
I can't imagine I'll be the only one encountering this problem.

Initially, I thought that after upgrading to OS 3.0, my apps did not load. After a few sync attempts with the same results, I found that they were there BUT, Apple placed all the third party apps on another page. It looked like the apps ended with the App store being the only one on the second page and I assumed the rest were gone. When I flicked to the next page - there they were. I just had to do some rearranging to get them back in the places where I wanted them.

I thought I had the same problem until I figured out that my apps were in fact all there - they just were moved one page over, after a blank page. I had to manually move all my apps up one page and all was well.

Worked great the first time. Kept everything plugged in. Old wives tales die hard.

The update wiped out exchange contacts and calendar data as well as some email folder contents on the iPhone. To retrieve it required turning each of them off and then on again to re-download the data from exchange.

(Also, what happened to MMS? Or is that only on the new 3G-S?)

I upgraded the OS today and I've got the same problem. My mail, calendar & contacts keeps clearing the items out and resynching. I tried turning them on and off - no luck. I also deleted the account and recreated it - no luck.

Has anybody else had this problem? Any solutions/suggestions?

    Thanks.

MMS is a issue with AT&T. I heard that it will NOT be supported till late Summer.

The bluetooth stereo works OK on iPod files, but occasionally breaks up when there is other activity on the phone. However, for streaming audio (like Public Radio) it breaks up too often to be useful.

Update when fine, but killed my camera. Images are red and pixelated. Tried to restore, no dice. Still messed up.

Well, don't plan on dropping your new iPhone 3.0 in the dock for a quick sync before heading off for work. My 16G iPhone 3G has been "Backing Up iPhone" for almost 45 minutes now. The progress bar is moving, so I don't think it's hung. But I am going to be late for work today.

I hope this is just the first sync with 3.0 only. Extrapolating from the current progress, it's going to take over an hour to complete, and I'd hate to imagine that every sync takes an hour.

I did my 2nd gen 16GB iPod Touch last night. Last backup before the upgrade went by in under a minute. First backup after the upgrade probably took about 15, maybe 20, minutes - though it seemed longer. Thereafter, it was back to normal.

Mobileme syncing of contacts, calendars, bookmarks doesn't work. Nor does find my iphone. Try to turn on the slider -- it turns "On" initially, but then snaps back to off. Anyone know why and how to fix?

Had problem connecting to update server.
Solution: in NetBarrier turn off block banners option.
This has happened with Apps Store before

    thanks for the post
turning off Banner Filter in NetBarrier allowed me to connect right off, after three days of getting the message "cannot connect to update server". I originally thought it was just the high demand for downloads, but when I tried to connect at 3 AM, I thought it must be otherwise. MacFixIt / VersionTracker to the rescue again.

It's the third day I'm being denied contact with iTunes update server. I tried at every time of day, clicking hundreds of time.
I can see through Netbarrier monitor that there's 2 way communication when I click "check for updates" when my iPhone is plugged in.

Logged in my iTunes account, synced iPhone, restarted iPhone and computer (imac 2.16 white), stopped intego firewall, repaired permissions, unlocked iPhone, unplugged-re plugged iPhone, unplugged other USB/Firewire devices...
My network works perfectly, have complete access to Internet.

Has to be Apples servers selectively deactivating updates based on IP addresses...

    EXTREMELY ANNOYING FOR SHURE.

Note NetBarrier: only turning off Firewall is not enough, you must also turn off "Data Filter" and "Banner Filter" plus uncheck all "Info.. Hiding" option.
