Apple has released an update for their AppleTV home media devices. This update adds the ability to search Flickr, new browse and view options, and the ability to control the AppleTV with an iPhone or iPod Touch.

The full list of new features since Update 2.3.1 are the following:

  1. Remote app directional control
Control your Apple TV with simple finger gestures via the Remote app. This feature requires Remote 1.3 running on an iPhone or iPod touch with iPhone OS 3.0.

  2. Flickr search
Search Flickr photo tags to find recently updated photos of interest. Save searches to quickly find new photos or use as a screen saver for Apple TV.

  3. New view options
View movies By Genre, By Movie, or Unwatched. View TV Shows and Podcasts By Date, By Show, or Unwatched.

  4. Updated transport and chapter modes
During video playback, click right or left to fast forward or rewind. Additional clicks increase the speed. Click down to show chapter markers.

The update should be available through the AppleTV either by waiting for the automatically scheduled software update check, or by going to the Settings >> General >> About >> Software Update section of the device settings and manually starting the update process.

If you have troubles with this update, try doing a factory restore of the AppleTV and then update to version 2.4 again. A few users have had success with this both in this update and in previous versions.

Be sure to back up all your AppleTV data to iTunes before updating the AppleTV software.

With the awful service from iTunes Store, the lengthy download times (even with Fios broadband), when prompted to play movie the resulting white/blank screen requiring unplugging the power cord for five minutes (or less) and rebooting, downloads that don't complete before the movie plays to the end causing multiple interruptions, I am disappointed in reading what 2.4 update does and does not include. Any improvements in downloading and playing rentals would be greatly appreciated.
The last article about Apple TV in Macworld spawned many uncomplimentary posts. This update makes me wonder if Apple is tone deaf.

I wouldn't blame Apple TV or even necessarily Apple for your network problems though I can't speak to iTunes servers' speed relative to Fios. I have DSL and they're able to max my connection. Are you talking about HD content? On my DSL connection I can't even hope to stream HD without a considerable buffer so the few I've rented, I've simply let the download run its course before watching. But for standard-def I've never had a problem with real-time except when something at home was loading the network.

In terms of the update, the ability to FFW,RRW is appreciated and fills in a rather glaring hole in the UI.

I also just let them download first. If everything is perfect you might be able to watch movies as they download. Thing is the internet is rarely perfect.

A lot of people, including myself, have found that doing so breaks the connection with iTunes. After updating it no longer appears as a device on iTunes even though the ATV still has a solid internet connection and can still download content. I'm using an Apple Base Station so no hardware incompatibility and OS X 10.5.7 so the latest version of the operating system. See the Apple Support forums for Apple TV for more reports:
