iTunes 8.2.1 breaks Palm Pre syncing

by CNET staff
The latest update to iTunes, version 8.2.1, has reportedly broken the Palm Pre's ability to sync with iTunes. Shortly after the update was released, reports of the break began circulating--a fate we alluded to a couple weeks ago.

Approximately one month ago Apple released a vaguely-worded warning to third-party hardware developers--which many took to be explicitly directed at the then newly released Palm Pre:

"Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players."
iTunes 8.2.1 has made good on this warning concerning the Palm Pre.

Why is this surprising at all? Makes good business sense. Why should Apple help Pre to achieve its stated objective to become the 'iPhone killer'?
