Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 2: Update Issues
MacFixIt reader "Matt W." reports on issues surrounding Microsoft Office 2008 volume licenses:
"For those users who have used a Volume licence installer (i.e. if you have bought a VLA for Office 2007/8) then it seems that the updater screws around with the install, so that you get the 'Invalid Product Key' message. Even less helpful is Microsoft's Help page on the subject (there's a link to follow in the error message) as it has patently incorrect information."Matt has a solution though:
"Anyway the fix is fairly simple, albeit a real pain if you have a lot of Macs to update, and it's to run the original installer again, without deleting anything first. It leaves the updated items intact and resets the install. Tried it on 3 Macs at work now and all exhibited the same problems/fix."MacFixIt reader "Ton Z." reports a product key issue:
"After installing the 12.2 (SP2) update for office 2008, the applications won't start. Error tells me that my product key isn't correct. Well it did work up to 12.1.9."MacFixIt reader "Sasha" reports that .pptx files created in previous versions of Office no longer open:
"After updating to office 2008 12.2.0 .pptx files created by the previous version (12.1.9) won't open anymore.MacFixIt reader "Frank P." echoes Sasha's issues with PowerPoint:"Microsoft PowerPoint cannot open the file. You may need to download the latest updates for Office for Mac. Dou you want to visit the Microsoft Web site for more information?"
PowerPoint files simply won't open any longer. Very frustrating!"
"When MS Office 2008 first came out, Powerpoint was unable to open files created by Powerpoint 2004. This was fixed in Update 1.Have you experienced any of these issues? Have you experienced other issues with the Microsoft Office Service Pack 2 update? Have you solved any issues? Let us know in the comments!Update 2 brings the problem back. I cannot open presentations that I created just a few days ago in Powerpoint.
This is a MAJOR problem for me. I'm developing several courses and need access to those materials. The first time this occurred I was able to open the presentations using Keynote. Unfortunately I have to send these courses to the university for more processing so that's not an option this time."
