Written by Joe AimonettiSince WWDC's array of announcements, one product has been anticipated by more than a few Apple fans--namely, the iPhone iDisk application. Here is a quick look at what the application brings and my first impressions.
The integration of the iPhone/iPod touch with Apple's MobileMe service continued today with the release of the iDisk iPhone/iPod touch application. The release notes read:
"With MobileMe iDisk, you can view and share the files on your iDisk right from your iPhone or iPod touch. And true to Apple form, it delivers. The interface is slick and easy. Each file folder shows you how many items are in the folder. Upon navigating to files, the sharing interface brings up an email template (similar to the sharing interface on MobileMe's iDisk Web Application). The connection seemed to be quick using my iPhone 3G (both on Wi-Fi and 3G). Clicking on a file, such as a .jpg, allows you to view, share, or delete it. The app has a local cache of recently viewed items (space is set by the user, between 50MB and 200MB). As a side note, I was not able to view RAW photos.
Log in with your MobileMe username and password and you'll see a list of the folders and files on your iDisk. Select a file to view it on your iPhone. To share a file with someone else, just tap the share icon, choose your recipients, and MobileMe iDisk will send them an email with a link to download your file directly from MobileMe. You can assisgn a password to keep your files secure and even limit the number of days the download will be available - all right from your iPhone."
All-in-all, for any MobileMe user, especially ones that take advantage of their iDisk already, this app is a must. If you do not already use your iDisk, the MobileMe iDisk app may get you started--it's worth it.
