Apple releases OS X Leopard 10.5.8 Update

Written by Topher Kessler

Apple has released OS X 10.5.8. The update is recommended for all OS X Leopard users, and according to the update documentation includes "general operating system fixes that enhance stability, compatibility, and security."

Some specific issues that were addressed are:

  • Compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
  • an issue that could cause some monitor resolutions to no longer appear in Displays System Preferences.
  • issues that may affect Bluetooth reliability.

Apple has details on this update in the following knowledgebase articles:

The update weighs in at 165MB in Software Update, and is on the Apple downloads page as well at 274MB. As with all system updates, be sure to back up your system before applying this one, especially with a bootable or full system restore solution such as Time Machine or a cloning option. When applying this update, the computer will restart to the grey Apple screen with the spinning wheel, and will then reboot again. While the update may take some time to apply, allow it to complete on its own and do not interrupt the process by restarting the system.

As an extra precaution against errors that may arise when updating, we recommend you take the following steps when applying the update. Performing these steps after updating can also help fix update problems if they arise:

  1. Download the "combo" updater for this update (available here)
  2. Reboot into Safe Mode
  3. Run a permissions fix and drive check on the boot drive with Disk Utility
  4. Apply the update and reboot
  5. Run a permissions fix again with Disk Utility

NOTE: This update seems to have a problem with permissions, so while the above procedure is our usual recommendation, first run a permissions VERIFICATION and if you do not have any of the permissions output mentioned in our recent article on the 10.5.8 permissions problems, then go ahead with running the permissions fix. Otherwise, follow the suggestions in the article on how to correct the problem.

UPDATE: Direct downloads are now available:

Downloaded and installed - lost my wi-fi!

Router shows I'm connected, network shows airport connected. but I can't connect to any other computers on the network nor do I have web access.

I can see other computers I just can't connect. I'll post an update when i solve the problem. Wish me luck!

Have you done a permissions fix or even just a standard restart (try Safe Mode, and then rebooting normally)? How about trying a PRAM reset (holding options-command-P-R at bootup until the computer resets and makes the boot chimes again?

I just updated to 10.5.8 and I also can't connect with my wireless router. I'm using an early 2008 white MacBook. I'm sending this via a direct connection via an ethernet cable.

I can't believe this has happened again. I had this problem with another Leopard update, the one they withdrew after being released for a day.

I'm not into doing a time machine restore. Any suggestions?

Well, I reset the PRAM holding the option+command+P+R keys down during reboot (did it 3x) and it cured my wireless connect problem after the 10.5.8 upgrade.

I hope others have a smoother experience with the upgrade.

(By the way, I always do a permissions repair before I install a major update.)

Just a quick update. While I am now able to connect via wireless when using the AC power adaptor (after resetting the PRAM), I have discovered that I lose the ability to connect to the Internet when using wireless when on battery power.

If I reconnect to the AC power adaptor, internet connectivity returns. It seems that there are plenty people having problems on Apple's discussion forum. I've tried all the fixes recommended here, including cache removal, PRAM reset and safe boot. Apple needs to fix this new bug.

"general operating system fixes that enhance stability, compatibility, and security." - is this not like the description of every one of their releases.. so lamely vague

I rarely, rarely ever do any updates unless there is something I MUST have. I am still at 10.5.6 and plan to stay that way as it is stable. and I never have, nor ever will, do any stand alone security release. I have seen updates create more havoc then their benefits time and time and time again

What's funny about that perspective is that when 10.5.6 came out, people said the same thing--I'm sticking with 10.5.4 or whatever. The truth of the matter is that most issues that people have with updates are not actually the result of the update. Generally it's an issue with a third party application or add-on that hasn't been updated yet.

The OS version you're on feels more stable because the third party developers finally got around to updating, but there's nothing different about the OS release.

And that's beside the point that millions upon millions of people install the update with no issues whatsoever. It only feels like "everyone" has issues because that's all you read about on forums and sites like MacFixIt. People do not start forum threads to report, "All's well here."

What's lame is you not reading the document that the update details link points to: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606

I installed the update and, after rebooting, receive the error message "You cannot use this version of the application "Mail" with this version of Mac OSX."

Software update did't offer any new version of "Mail" but the Info box says I was updated to version 3.6 today.

Wish I had been more skeptical...

Have you attempted to download the Combo Update?

That is the "silver bullet" that seems to always work. Personally, I'll always start with that (as the article suggests).

Weirdness. FYI, I haven't updated yet, still running OSX 10.5.7, and am already running Mail 3.6. I think it updated to 3.6 with OSX 10.5.7. I have it on both an Intel MBP and a PPC G5 tower.

it seems that the problem i had with the bluetooth mouse interference with the wifi has gone after updating to 10.5.8.

Specifically when the wifi bandwith reached 1 mbyte/sec and above the bluetooth mighty mouse became unresponsive and very slow.

thanksfully this update adresses this issue.

I ran permission repair once. Got the typical symbolic link stuff. Fine. But this is weird: First permission repair showed that the system had no idea what permissions to assign to certain items, i.e ?--------- (never seen this before). Then when I ran it again, the actual permissions show as ---------. !!! (I guess this is "fixed"? Anybody else see this?) Every single one of these was -rw-r--r-- before the repair. Now take a look after a second repair:

    Repairing permissions for ?xxx"
    Reading permissions database.
Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.

It would seem that there are permission problems with both the Delta and Combo 1.5.8 update files, at least for some of us...

    "All good here"
I'm posting this partly in response to one of the earlier posts, but also to balance out the comments.

    I have a Late 2007 MBP 2.4 GHz

    Just upgraded from 10.5.7.
Prepped by using automation command in Onyx, then booted into safe mode.

I did a few common tasks, and checked for the above mentioned problems, and my system seems to be running normally in all respects except that my permissions repair was the same the person who posted above. (I should have pressed the "verify" button instead of my reflex action of hitting the "repair" button). However, I have not yet encountered any permission problems such as denial of access to certain files.

The rot seems to have started some time back with a rushed update.
Tons of "link" thingies which apparently have nothing to do with permissions.
This latest lot of garbage which appeared after running permissions is probably in the same category.
The trick would be not to be first off the mark with an update!

I'd like to add to my above post, that when I installed the update, I did from the combo updater (as I always do)

I read the Macfixit suggestion of reinstalling the combo update, which I did. This time I only verified the permissions, and the odd behavior persists. I guess the fix is not to fix permissions, until apple patches this.

I updated both a Intel Mac and a older PPC Mac.

Both updated smoothly using the combo update and no errors to report.

For those having problems. Blame yourselves with the 3rd party garbage collection you have. Get on those developer's cases and quit ******** about it being Apple's fault when it's not. And some of you may have altered your System using 3rd party tools or manually screwed around in there, once again blame yourselves.

After dozens of Mac OS X updates and thousands of clients, I have yet to report any update broke anything on my client's Mac's.
