MacFixIt Readers Report: Early Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard issues

by CNET staff

Edited by Joe Aimonetti

Snow Leopard has only been on the shelves for a few hours, but many MacFixIt readers have written in to express their opinions, issues, and workarounds for Apple's latest operating system update.

Microsoft Office for Mac 2008
MacFixIt reader "Andy R." reports:

"Since installing 10.6, I have not been able to get any Microsoft Office 2008 program to run. Apps hang on "Optimizing Font Menu Performance." No workarounds as of yet. Tried deleting Office entirely and reinstalling from scratch, as well as all the usual troubleshooting routines but to no avail."

Possible fix
If the issue is font related, try Validating your fonts in Font Book. Select your entire collection, click File > Validate Fonts. Remove any fonts that are causing issues.

Fan speeds, third party programs, printers
MacFixIt reader "Paul D." reports on some initial challenges with Snow Leopard and some fixes he has discovered along the way:

  • Fan speeds up a lot more than with Leopard. Seems to take longer to drop RPM than with Leopard. Sometimes the RPM doesn't drop at all and I have to reboot.
  • Fujitsu ScanSnap Manager won't save a scan to file. Work around is to "email", then drag the pdf of the scan to the desktop
  • Print box doesn't go away when printing using the Ambrosia Easy Envelope widget. Work around is to delete and drag a new copy of the widget on the dashboard
  • Had to reinstall CISCO VPN Client updated to 4.9.01.0180. Even if you are running this version, it looks like you have to do a reinstall to get CISCO VPN Client to work.
  • My favorite ScreenSaver, FreeFall doesn't work with Snow Leopard. I've contacted the developer and they are recompiling with the added screensaver savings so it will work.
  • SuperDuper doesn't work until you copy fsaclctl to Snow Leopard from Leopard (it's in /usr/sbin/fsaclctl). Shirt Pocket expects to release SuperDuper 2.6 for Snow Leopard in Sept.
  • Old printers disappear. I have an HP LaserJet 4000 with AppleTalk. Looks like AppleTalk is history so had to do an IP install for this printer to work with Snow Leopard.
Snow Leopard not installing on boot volume
MacFixIt reader "Charles T." reports a wider issue where Snow Leopard will not install on the boot volume of his Mac:
"I'm having an issue where Snow Leopard will not install on my boot volume but will on some other attached volumes. The boot volume was formatted by Apple and shipped with the computer just months ago. It is formatted as GUID, Mac OS Extended Journaled, and is my current 10.5.8 boot volume. Several others are reporting this problem: 1, 2.
Incorrect Time Zones
MacFixIt reader "Sam" reports that the Snow Leopard installation has incorrect Time Zone information:
"The city of Chihuahua (Mexico) is in the wrong time zone. Snow Leopard has it in the Central Time Zone, while it actually is in the Mountain Time Zone. Where does Snow Leopard get the time zone information from? Are there more cities in the same situation?"
Security settings not launching
MacFixIt reader "Klaus B." reports that his Security settings were not launching in Snow Leopard until:
After trying a lot of ways I finally found out that I have to delete the prferences of security located at:
Users/library/preferencees/com.apple.security.plist

A new issue brought to my attention was one user could not, by any means that I tried, to get his Airport to obtain via DHCP an IP address and then connect to the Internet.

Not even a manual address worked. It had full bars, but no communication. Cycled router, modem, restarted, all of it and not once was he able to get Airport to work.

    Upgraded 10.5.8 to 10.6.

Similar problems. Will not connect to internet or email on a frequent basis. PC in next switch port has no problem.

same issues here...tried a number of things (re-install SL, created new location, removed airport and re-added, deleted system config preferences file, set manual dhcp, renewed license dhcp...) Mine returns to a self assigned IP (that I have never seen before)...if I set the IP manually, I get my network, but no internet. Works fine with ethernet cable. Back to 10.5.8

I had similar problems: no internet connectivity, and no amount or rebooting cable modems or wifi routers did anything to help.

I found a solution: from another computer on the same wifi network I found the DNS server IP addresses supplied by my ISP, In network preferences; advanced: DNS. Transfer these to the 10.6 computer (where the only ip address was 127.0.0.1). After adding the ISP DNS server IP addresses access to internet was restored.

    Hi

I had the same problem, I was on the wireless network but couldn't connect to the internet! I read another post down here which made me change my DNS servers, I used my iphone to log into my router, found out the DNS servers my ISP was using and added them .. also deleted the old ones..hey presto safari is now running like a dream!

So thanks to this site.. I joined just to say thanks and add my bit for anyone else!

SuperDuper has already been updated to version 2.6 so you should not have a problem.

MS Office 2008 has 2 programs that are PowerPC. Click the Apple and then about and then more, select software applications and then order the Kind column and look at the list. The PowerPC programs will be found there.

All four main programs in Office 2008 are universal and are supposed to run native on Intel machines.

Some additional programs like Microsoft Query ARE PPC, you are right! A workaround for this would be to install Rosetta that is now optional on Snow Leopard. This should take care of the problems.

    OS X Server Admin Tools
OS X Server Admin Tools 10.5.x is an application that is incompatible with Snow Leopard and is removed during the install process of the new OS.

Moreover, Apple has not yet released Server Admin Tools 10.6.

So if you really need to administer a server from a client computer, you will be out of luck if you install Snow Leopard on the client. WAIT until the new version of Admin is available.

Workaround: Remote Admin 3.3 does run with SL. If you have ARD installed, you can run Server Admin Tools 10.5.x on the server directly by controlling its screen via ARD.

Norton AV Auto-Protect v10.1.2 will not launch and run. As of this writing there is no info on the Symantec website.

I contacted the tech support at Symantec this afternoon and they said a patch would be available for this in a few days. They are aware of the problem.

Norton anti-virus products are not the best to say the least. This has been extensively covered here at MacFixit forums that have now moved to http://www.finetunedmac.com. You would be better off with free ClamXav or iAntiVirus. They also update virus definitions faster than Symantec.

I am now on the phone with Apple! After install (Upgrade) I receive kernel panic on boot. Had to erase drive and do a clean install, not the experience I was expecting!
