MacBook Pro Special Report follow-up #2: Cannot connect to LEAP networks

Several users note an issue where the MacBook Pro is unable to connect to LEAP authenticated wireless networks used by several universities and other organizations.

One reader writes:

"I work as an IT/Mac supporter for the Lucerne School of Art and Design. Today I had to support 3 MacBook Pro users - all of them were unable to connect to our LEAP protected wireless LAN."

Users receive the following error in their system log after errors connecting to the LEAP network:

  • mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface lo0 (127.0.0.1); delaying packets by 5 seconds

This appears to be an issue with the TCP/IP implementation used by Mac OS X 10.4.5 for Intel, and will likely require a software update from Apple.

Battery loose? Over the past few days we've been covering an issue where the MacBook Pro suddenly shuts off when disconnected from external power, apparently not receiving power from a charged battery.

One MacFixIt reader, Jason Musselwhite, reports that looseness of the battery may be the cause for this issue on his unit:

"I have had my MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz for about a week now. The battery will have a full or near full battery charge when I am done using it. I have checked and double-checked to make sure it is actually asleep when I put it back in the laptop case. When I go to get it out of the case (or table, or couch, or wherever I left it) I often find it powered off. Sometimes it will not power on after several attempts.  Re-seating the battery always gets a boot on the very next try.

"I then noticed that the battery in the battery compartment does not seem to fit as tightly as the battery did in my PowerBook G4 12". The battery seems to be a bit loose in the compartment so I am wondering if it is losing contact and therefore shutting down the laptop.  There is definitely a bit of 'wiggle' room with the battery."

    A possible solution for the LEAP issue was posted on the Apple discussion
    boards:

    1) Download the 1.1.1 version of the driver (we have 1.1.0) here:
    http://chrisnolan.org/IO80211Family.kext.zip

    2) Back up your copy of the driver which is found in /System/Library/
    Extensions/IO80211Family.kext

    3) Drag the new driver into the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder

    4) Open up a terminal

    5) Type:

    sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext/

    6) Restart

    The suggested solution in my first posting didn't work (in all cases).

    Update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 and connections to LEAP networks will work!
