.Mac sync issues: Errors in logs, incomplete synchronizations; fix

Several users report receiving the following error messages in their console log after attempting .Mac synchronizations under Mac OS X 10.4.5:

  • 2006-03-22 14:46:23.589 SyndicationAgent[13268] Error: could not create directory '/Library/Application Support/Syndication'
  • 2006-03-22 14:46:23.590 SyndicationAgent[13268] WARNING: SyncController: Couldn't create .mac dir /Library/Application Support/Syndication

Users who are receiving these errors are, in some cases, finding that not all data is properly synchronized across Macs specified for data retrieval.

In some cases, the issue can be resolved by deleting the following files then re-attempting synchronization:

  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.isync.plist
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.isync.registry.plist
  • ~/Library/Caches/dotmacsyncclient
  • ~/Library/Caches/dotMacTranslator
  • ~/Library/Caches/dotMacPrefTool

The fix described did not help at all. All four of my Macs continue log the errors
    every hour.

Same here: deleted all listed plist and pref files and resynced. I even
unregistered and re-registered one of the machines, but to
no avail. I don't seem to have lost any data so far.

It turns out the errors are actually caused by Safari trying to do something with
the RSS feeds and their bookmarks, and Apple is working on the problem.
I received the following form DotMacSupport@apple.com today:
"Apple is currently investigating an issue where the read or unread status of RSS
feeds in Safari is not syncing with .Mac. This issue does not affect the syncing
of Bookmarks or RSS feeds, just the read or unread status of synced RSS feeds.
This issue may cause errors about the /Library/Application Support/Syndication
folder to appear in Console when syncing Bookmarks with .Mac. We apologize
for an inconvenience this issue may cause."
